For the last few weeks I've been working on a bit of prototype hardware - a low-end Eurorack digital oscillator based on the new low-cost STM32C542 MCU. I've published the hardware and firmware sources for that on Github:

github.com/emeb/Cheep4
A 3D rendering of a printed circuit board tilted at an angle so both the front and back sides are visible. The board is dark green with gold flash exposed metal where the soldermask uncovers it. Dark gray integrated circuits and other SMD parts are visible on the left/front side while pots and jacks in green and gray are seen on the right/back side. The whole assembly is floating against a dark gray gradient background and colorful XYZ axis arrows are visible in the lower left.

The internet‘s ruthless efficiency killed little shops run by old men where they would find you a specific screw, bolt etc from their dusty boxes out the back. Now the internet has gone to shit, you google that specific item and get shown a big pile of random loose screws. Bring back old man shops.
Stainless steel knurled thumb screws, high type. No use to me because I want M4 knurled brass thumb nuts, high type.

I'm pleased to announce that the Synthesis Technology E352 and E370 oscillators are now available from VCV Rack. These new plugins faithfully emulate the original hardware versions of the modules using the DSP source code I wrote. Find more about them here:

If you see this, quote with a robot that isn’t from “Star Wars”, “Star Trek”, “Dr Who”, or “Transformers”
A color photograph of Marvin the Paranoid Android from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy showing a very rectangular, vaguely human-shaped silver robot standing in front of an eroded tan-colored landscape. The head has a prominent brow and nose with two downward-angled triangular red eyes. The thorax has a panel of indicators at chest-level and deep horizontal grooves. The arms are jointed and square-ish in cross-section with simple lobster-claw grippers for hands. The image cuts off below the waist.

It bothers me that Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor is invariably associated with horror/occult. I grew up as the child of an organ builder and in my early experience that was just another piece by good ol' Bach and it brings happy memories. Sad that it's tainted as weird.

I see that we're in the process of moving beyond the beautiful moment in time when value was created for the shareholders.
A black and white cartoon drawn by Toro depicting a man in a ragged suit sitting near a fire talking to three small children. He says "Yes, the planet got destroyed. But for a beautiful moment in time we created a lot of value for shareholders."

Anyone ever notice this?
Two photos side-by-side looking strangely similar. On the left, Keanu Reeves from "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" with a blank look and a mop of dark hair. On the right, the gelfling Jen from "The Dark Crystal" with a blank look and a mop of dark hair... and mouse ears sticking through the hair.

I'm saddened to report that my friend and colleague Paul Schreiber passed away this morning. He was a consummate engineer with deep roots in music and technology and worked on the TRS-80, the Realistic Concert-Mate MG-1 synth, the MOTM modular system and many Eurorack modules. He will be missed.

Yesterday we had a wet weather system (first one in months) come thru the Phoenix area. It dumped some snow in the high country, including the Four Peaks area northeast of town. We took a drive up that way this afternoon and caught this panorama.
A panorama photograph of a desert scene. A gnarly dead tree on the left side, snow-capped mountains on the horizon and dry, grassy scrub in the near area. Saguaro cactus in the near distance and blue sky with little fluffy clouds above.

Rewatched "The Lost Boys" tonight. Found myself identifying more with Barnard Hughes' Grandpa character this time than I would have expected the first time I saw it. Gotta say though - that's some weapons-grade 80s nostalgia.

Somewhere in my neighborhood a dog is barking incessantly. The reverb on that sound is amazing - far away with a really long tail. That'd be a good audio effect.

I was flying out of Seattle yesterday and caught this image of Mt. Rainier
Looking out over the wing of an airliner at a lone mountain framed by the wing below and clouds above. The mountain stands alone illuminated by the setting sun with a small cap of clouds on its peak and surrounded by lower topography and blue sky in the far background.

The deserts of central Arizona are being overrun by an invasive species - Globe Chamomile aka "Stinknet" was accidentally introduced from southern Africa. There's no known way to control it aside from herbicides that cause collateral damage. I don't think we'll win this one.
Cute yellow flowers that look like tiny balls on the end of long stalks amid a haze of greenery with a blue sky in the background.

Watching MiB II intro where Serleena's ship face-plants in a NYC park then rights itself with three spindly legs. Recent lunar landers needed that tech.

My newest novel, BLADE, is out today. BLADE is the 4th in a series of five novels that I call the Inverted Frontier—space-faring #sciencefiction, set in the far, far future. I think of the series as sense-of-wonder fiction...

NBC showing the 1st Harry Potter movie tonight. Lotsa pharma ads. I guess they're admitting that it's not a movie for kids now - it's for old folks who remember when they were kids.

This 2000 interview with Paula Borsook (Cyberselfish) perfectly sums up/predicts everything that's happened with Silicon Valley in the past quarter century.

Though I should say this book was written over several years, and the culture has changed a bit over that time. One of the very recent changes has been that the übergeek libertarian culture I wrote about has been mated with MBA culture, which brings its own prejudices and religious beliefs to the party. That's an interesting melding: the masters-of-the-universe MBA culture colliding with awkward geek, "I don't have the world's best social skills" culture. But they love each other's rhetoric and ideology and there's a strange sort of symbiosis going on. Geeks and MBAs intrigue each other for complementary reasons: MBAs like being associated with the geek shibboleths of inventiveness and revolution; Geeks are attracted to the MBAs' promise of making things real through the glamour of money. And both of them like money because it's something that can be counted. So now, when we talk about high-tech culture, a lot of what we're talking about is really business-speculation culture, and a transplanted Midtown Manhattan advertising culture, or Wall Street financial culture. So, though we may use the words "high tech" these days to refer to this group, they're not all the same kind of person -- but they are finding lots of common ground. Absolutely. I noticed that at some point in the mid-'90s, we got major culture-creep, when programmers and systems administrators all became covert stock traders on the Web. Yes. It's horrifying. [laughs] Because -- and I'm not anti-technology or anti-geek -- what is really best about these people is what I call their "curious child" quality -- scientists have it -- that kind of noodling around with code, and zoning out for 36 hours at a time working on something. That's where the really good creative work can happen. But if you have one corner of your monitor that's constantly watching the stock market, or you'r
