🪧 Signs of the Times

Look around. Listen. The times are already holding up the same signs they hold up every Covid wave.
October 6, 2026 at 6:11 PM
Tonight I looked around my class and every face was empty.
Not tired the way people get after a long day of work, but emptied.
Eyes half open, limbs still moving. Yet, nobody is home inside.
It felt as if something had already come through and taken the part that makes a person present.

Watch a Covid wave move through a community that has decided the pandemic is over and you will hear the most inventive denial of your life.

A woman in my fitness class today, casual as the weather: “Well all last week all 3 of my kids were out of school with strep throat so sorry to miss your class last week.”

On July 31st my kid’s urology specialist called and said the doctor was out for a family emergency so we had to reschedule.

Small class this morning.

Faith looked around the empty room and asked, “Where is everyone today?”

I said Kelly had been out sick, missed last week too.

I waited 8 weeks to see another ENT.

For years since Covid, my sinuses and ears have held congestion that will not ever clear. This sinus invasion feels like it moved past tissue and made a home in my soul. It will never leave me.

"Normal" is not a word. It is relative, a private hallucination that lives only in the mind of the person saying it. Everyone carries a different version and calls it the world.
A 30 year old drops in the grocery aisle and they call it "normal." Others see the slow collapse they will never connect.

2022 was the worst year of my life.
I was fighting for my life from repeat Covid infections brought home from my toddler while we had to work to survive.

Yesterday morning work meeting.
My boss in the back row coughing like she was trying to exorcise herself. Someone asks if we still hosting the Fall fest for a Saturday in October.

She says, "Well I been out all week with the 'flu' so I will find out."
September 27, 2026 at 6:16 PM
The gym was already short 2 instructors before the first class even started. Both out with “the flu.”

I offered to cover and taught them back to back while people kept looking around asking where the usual faces were.

A client pulled me aside after class to ask me a question.

"I have been getting this crazy dizziness when I stand up. Never had it before. Started the last month or so. Is it the workouts?"
September 26, 2026 at 6:36 PM
Wednesday she didn’t show.

Her best friend walked into my class and said she was home with a “really bad flu or strep. IT’S GOING AROUND RIGHT NOW!”

I was lying on my side in the chair yesterday afternoon getting a pellet inserted when the nurse practitioner coughed.
She cleared her throat twice before she even started talking.

“You doing okay?” I asked.

Sat in the local pharmacy just now anxiously waiting because my state as of lately wants a prescriptions for Covid shots again.

The so called “Covid conscious community” is no community at all. If it ever was, you may no longer recognize it.

I am a ghost haunting my own former life.
For over 6 years, I have walked these rooms carrying the weight of a body broken by betrayal.

Long Covid disproportionately hits women in their prime parenting years making moms one of the largest affected groups. CDC data shows women at 8.5 % ever had Long Covid versus 5.2 % for men with the highest rates in ages 35 - 49 at 8.9 %.

Today in my brand new circuit training class that I started teaching this week, I saw Long Covid wearing someone else’s body like a costume it had not finished breaking in.

Yesterday morning, the first sign slithered in without ceremony.
A family member woke and spoke it like an afterthought: “I don’t know why I have a runny nose again.”

The day unfolded in the same unbroken rhythm, sniffling, coughing, the wet, endless sound of a throat that refused to clear.

This virus learned a smarter trick than all the rest that came before.
It turns the infected into denial zombies who attack anyone speaking the truth.

I’ve watched it claim family and friends, even people in the small community here.

This 4th of July exposed what Covid has done to millions of us.

My fingers and toes turn bright red and swollen in the heat, after exercise, or a hot bath.
It’s not Raynaud’s, POTS or dysautonomia. Just another souvenir from Covid.

A mom told me today about her 10 year old son. Two moles on his skin suddenly changed color and grew irregular borders.
Her mother instinct refused to let it rest. Doctors removed them both. Both came back abnormal.

Last September, he had his adenoids taken out after endless “sinus infections.”

Just pulled into the parking lot at work.
Windows up, car silent.

Then through the metal and glass comes this man walking through the parking lot:
