It was fun going to a concert with my teen niece and nephew (and my brother) last night. The kids love Weezer! The kids (and my brother) have not heard of The Shins, though. After The Shins I said, "Nice job, Shins! Keep it up and someday you'll be Knees!" and my nephew laughed. I win!

Come on. Just because I'm complying doesn't make me complicit. That's not fair.

Weezer will be here imminently. To handle the weezing.

I reread Chuck Palahniuk's "Invisible Monsters," which I read in 2000 and remembered as having a jaw-dropping reveal at some point ("jaw-dropping" is a pun if you've read the book).

But guess what: I misremembered what the surprise was! So I was surprised all over again! The system works!

Holy crap I was just reminded that the fascist who comes to power in Sinclair Lewis’s IT CANT HAPPEN HERE (1935) does so partly by promising $5,000 to everyone. They really are using this book as a checklist.
The “Minute Men” (ICE), who are given big cash incentives to join. (All Americans were promised $5,000 [100K in 2026 dollars], which contributed to Windrip’s victory, but post-inauguration they’re having trouble working out the particulars.)

Did anyone catch the NIGHT OF THE HUNTER visual reference in BUDDY? I happened to have seen NOTH a few days before, so it was fresh in my mind. There's a shot when the children are hiding from Buddy that mirrors this one:

You shouldn't try to interview Tom Cruise. Would you interview the wind? Would you interview the concept of joy?

Since it's newly relevant, there's no "beast" in bestiality, neither in spelling nor pronunciation. It's bes-chee-ality or bes-tee-ality, but no beast.

Why haven't I been published in Fangoria? Because I'm gay? Because I'm Mormon? Because I'm a GAY MORMON?? You might say it's because I haven't submitted or even pitched anything, but that is homophobic/intolerant of you.

First viewing of MALLRATS (1995). We should *still* be talking about the 15-year-old girl who's given a $20K book advance to have sex with adult men and film it, all with her parents' approval. This is why movies generally should not be made by one guy. You need to bounce your ideas off someone.

OK, *this* Charlie Brown had hoes.
In other news, please look at this photo of a 16-year-old Willem Dafoe playing Charlie Brown in a production of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown.

Trump reserves his "low I.Q." insult for Black people; ergo, "high I.Q." probably just means "white." We need a white president.

Because the Provo airport is still pretty small, nobody is enforcing the "you can't park at the curb and wait to pick people up, you gotta go around the block if they're not out yet" rule, and the selfish chuds of Provo are parking there, stretched out into the traffic lane, clogging things up.

This really is insane (the drink wasn’t mine). With tip it was an even $50. Airports are lawless places. (I am grateful for my privilege, we are on stolen land, etc.)

There was a hook ‘em horns situation in Austin this weekend. Many people came from miles around for the purpose of hooking ‘em horns. Everywhere you looked, horns were being hook ‘em’d.

I had a swell time seeing friends who happen to live in Austin, watching mostly good movies, eating mostly unhealthy food, and learning a tremendous amount of information about everyone (if I say “gossip” it sounds gossipy). There are some fine folks in that absolutely uninhabitable hellscape.

Using humor to cope with sad things (or Charlie Kirk dying)? Yes, that’s definitely something Gen Z came up with, another win for the most inventive generation.
This week marks the anniversaries of 9/11 and the Charlie Kirk shooting at Utah Valley University, but you may have seen your social media flooded with memes and jokes about the tragedies.

A psychology professor explains how it might be Gen Z's way to cope with heavy news beyond their control.
