It's vastly more comforting to believe in an imminent robot apocalypse than the truth: the things that will destroy us are extensions of the unsexy but obvious problems all around us.

We are not doomed in one grand way, but a thousand petty small ways.
Certain kinds of smart people tend to have a "sexy apocalypse" problem when it comes to thinking about risk. E.g. skynet turning everyone in paperclips, while bad, is also *kind of cool and fun* at the same time. Where the reality is that most actual disasters are both stupid and disappointing.

One thing I will always give Carney credit for is he is a hell of a speaker. I am to the point where I don't really believe what he says anymore, but man can he talk.

Carney to the EU: "We believe that a strong economy is not an end in itself, but the means to a just society. We are committed stewards of our natural heritage. We believe that our prosperity grows when it is shared."

I wish the Carney we hear in speeches was the Carney who governs Canada.

Disturbing, offensive, but perhaps fitting that Carney is seeking (much like far-right groups!) to rehab Sir John A’s reputation into that of a Great Uniter, rather than someone who engaged in horrific crimes against Indigenous people and Chinese immigrants (in part to build this project!)

I’m a big sci-fi dork, so I understand the term’s he’s using. Let me put it in terms you may be more familiar with: to mitigate global warming, we need to reverse the polarity on the dilithium crystals to disrupt the neutron flow, creating a resonating energy field which will destroy the alien queen

If this is true, then why is it that data centres are only going up in low income areas?
Hassett: "Data centers are very good for towns bc they create so many jobs & bring people in with high incomes that can buy houses & stuff like that. So if you take a sleepy town that hasn't seen much in the last 30 years & put a data center there, there are gonna be a bunch of happy residents."

Yeah, if we keep inflicting various forms of Crackdowns Thatcherites in different coloured ties, in a world where the Thatcherite consensus went kaboom 18 years ago, then we will keep getting the same result. But as we keep being told: there is no alternative.
