I’ve been wanting to see The Big Heat for years. Film noir is one of my favorite cinematic genres, and I’m a longtime fan of director Fritz Lang. There are dozens of films in my collection to support these claims, most recently this one.

Time for some really old-school horror, with this adaptation of H.G. Wells’ classic novel The Island of Dr. Moreau. Yeah, 1932 was an incredible year for horror cinema (if you don’t know, Google it and prepare to be awed), and Island of Lost Souls is one piece of it that has eluded me … until now.

Tonight’s follow-up feature is Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. The world needs more Bill and Ted, especially now. It’s a most triumphant existential exploration of what’s good and grand in human nature. And the soundtrack rips! Watch it now. And often.

When I recently revisited the documentary Not Quite Hollywood, I added a number of movies to my watch list, including Midnite Spares. Vehicular mayhem and stunt carnage is the order of the moment. Now watching …

I love folk horror, and the film Moloch has been on my list for a couple years. I’ve heard good things. Time to find out for myself.

I’m a fan of the acid Western subgenre. (Favorite: Jim Jarmusch’s Dead Man, 1995)
I’m a fan of the films — and comics — of Alejandro Jodorowsky.
I’ve been aware of El Topo since seeing Santa Sangre in college. (As one does.)
I’m now watching El Topo for the first time, and I am stoked.

I very recently realized I exist in one of the presumably extremely rare timelines where I’m not familiar with the movie Cross of Iron. Are you kidding me? James Coburn. David Warner. James Mason. Maximillian Schell. Other white German dudes. (Ok, not so much that last one.) In a Sam Peckinpah film.

A few thoughts on the U.S. movie-rating system, past and present, especially as it pertains to Dark of the Sun (1968). I enjoyed this movie immensely. It’s one of the manliest man films ever to man, and it’s nonstop entertaining for fans of that genre.

This Blu-ray was a blind buy. I’d heard the title before but knew nothing about the mercenary action-drama Dark of the Sun. But now that I know that Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino are fans of it, I’m in. Should be a testosteroney good time.

While Eaten Alive (1976) is known by a few other titles, it shouldn’t be confused with the apparently more emphatic Eaten Alive! that came out 4 years later. I’ve heard this Tobe Hooper film mentioned often over the years, so it’s been on my watch list for awhile. And Robert Englund got 9th billing.

This selection is partially inspired by last night’s viewing of Johnny Dangerously. I’ve seen many James Cagney films, but I don’t believe I’ve ever seen The Public Enemy. Since it’s considered one of the highlights of his oeuvre, and has Jean Harlow, I’m looking forward to watching this now.

Revisiting Johnny Dangerously tonight. 1984 is my second-favorite movie year, and this Amy Heckerling film starring Michael Keaton is one of the reasons why. Complemented by the theme song by one of my heroes, Weird Al Yankovic, I’m a longtime fan.

I went to the local library today, and they had on their used sale rack @200 Blu-rays from Criterion, Arrow, Kino Lorber, Blue Underground, and a few other boutique labels, all priced $4-$9. All looked fresh out of the cellophane. I asked, and the librarian said they were all from the same donation.

Now that I’ve fallen in love with folk horror gems Oddity and Hokum, I’m revisiting writer-director Damian McCarthy’s earlier effort, Caveat, which I first saw a handful of years ago. I recall liking it a lot. I’m wondering what I’ll notice this time around, now as a full-blown fan of the filmmaker.

Now rewatching The Friends of Eddie Coyle. Robert Mitchum leads a stacked cast of classic character actors in this 1973 gritty neo-noir underworld drama. I love many — many — Peter Yates directorial efforts, and this is my favorite. (Bullitt is a close second.) Not one dull moment in it. Riveting.

When people ask what my favorite comic book movie is, Unbreakable is my response. I’ve been a fan since first seeing it in the theater more than 25 years ago. It is, to me, a rare perfect film. Tonight, I’m revisiting it with my daughter, who’s been a fan since I introduced her to it many years ago.

Just finished reading the Philip K. Dick novel A Scanner Darkly. So, now I’m revisiting the movie, which I’ve not seen since shortly after it came out in 2006. Directed by Richard Linklater, it stars Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey Jr., and Woody Harrelson. Plus, I enjoy rotoscoped animation.

Damian McCarthy is rapidly becoming my favorite modern horror director. I became a fan of the writer-director of Hokum with Oddity, one of my top-5 films of 2024. Caveat (2020) is also solid. We at Filmnerdness 101 are longtime fans of Crispin Glover and the macabre roles that he’s known for taking on with his trademark style. No exception with Mr. K. This Sartre-esque dark tale of a man trying to leave a hotel is absurdist, quirky, and kooky. A highly satisfying way to spend 90 minutes.

Yesterday, I saw The Devil Wears Prada 2. It met my expectations. Very enjoyable, led by the stellar cast. Individually, with Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Stanley Tucci, or Emily Blunt in a film, I’ll watch it. Together, it’s a must for me. Even though haute couture is apparently anxiety-inducing.
