As of 9 pm yesterday, turnout was approaching 27,100!! 👏🏻
About a year ago, I sat down for coffee at Seven Stars Bakery in downtown Providence with Ben Shanahan, a political strategist with ties to progressive politics in New York City, who had signed on as Morales’s top strategist. With a level of confidence that struck me at the time as bordering on overconfidence, Shanahan told me the campaign’s goal was to drive turnout above 26,000 voters. I was incredulous. That meant increasing turnout by more than 20 percent from Smiley’s primary victory four years earlier. How, I wondered, does a state representative with little money and limited name recognition outside his district pull that off? Shanahan insisted Morales was a “remarkable political talent,” capable of uniting voters around an affordability message and possessing an unusual gift for creating social media videos that might look corny but delivered the campaign’s message again and again. As of Thursday morning, turnout was approaching 26,700.
