by god the first side of the purple mountains album is absolutely incontrovertible. margaritas at the mall could be a top five track for me.

omfg this is the fourth or fifth time i’ve heard love and happiness being played while i’m out and about. is there some sort of marketing or algo push of it happening? why am i hearing it all the time! it’s a good song! why am i hearing it so much!

not answering the question, which is a good one, but the best example of evil came from a story my grandmother told me. before hearing it i was slightly dismissive of the concept as requiring a religious framework that i didn’t subscribe to. i don’t think that any more.
a good question here; what are your favorite artistic depictions of evil, realistically or otherwise? I've mentioned my admiration for @abraham.bsky.social's Geder in THE DAGGER AND THE COIN series before - essentially 'what if a Gamergate guy but in a fantasy universe.'
Honestly it’s such a funny character where on the one hand he is evil and cunning and on the other he sometimes is just a fuck up, and that’s Tolkien being good at what he does man that’s what evil is, sometimes it’s just some dipshit with a helmet

@grimpen.bsky.social see this reply has directly led to me listening to Dalbergia Retusa which it turns out is *exactly* what i needed this morning 🙏

café les deux gares really is an excellent place to have a meal if you’re heading back from gare du nord, five minutes (rather full) stroll from eurostar check-in, but tucked around the side from the main station areas.

- pylons filled me with *an awful dread*
- dogs after i got attacked by one when little, thankfully there are lots of v good dogs around who have made up for it since
- the witch’s house down by the stream
- the sound of the toilet flush at night would send me into a panicked run back to my bedroom
oh, good game. Things I was frightened of as a child:

Icebergs (thought they gave you AIDS)
That episode of The Smurfs where they got ill and turned beige
The possibility of turning into the Honey Monster or Bertie Basset due to poor dietary choices
A benign family friend called Auntie Alice
Bungle
Things I was frightened of as a child:

Belisha Beacons
The Apaches public information film
Static on the television
Having to go down into the cellar to get a beer for my dad
The 999 theme tune
Wasps

People won't have been actually crossing once it got to be a large area of saltmarsh. They'll have lived on higher bits of ground and made fishing trips into the marsh which was more productive. Like the fens before they were drained.

is this *quite* the use case? i do remember being at a german broadcaster for a conference and they did one of these every day and if you didn’t acknowledge it it would keep going off. that was fun.

just remembering my mum and dad telling me how cinema audiences used to wolf whistle, cat call, jeer and stamp their feet during “sex” scenes (romantic scenes largely) at the cinema when they were growing up.
i think there's several interesting angles to this. the first one is somewhat banal, which is really just harm reduction. sex scenes are kind of like action scenes in that the more realistic they are, the harder it is on the actors and the more ethical issues that factor into it

this line on Hari struck home because it reminded me how few managers i’ve known, or people with a one-to-one relationship which requires the encouragement and assessment of work, are capable of saying “not good enough” “go back and do it again”.
