Money is for two things. Reducing entropy and having experiences. If you are a millionaire or a billionaire you fucked up so bad. You have to spend that shit to help people and then go see a metal show or buy some art at a gallery show or something

My first week at City Hall.

Trying to build pro-social technology in the context of a private, for-profit platform was one of the most infuriating experiences of my career. Excited to be doing it IRL this time.

I love that every fur I know clocked this as “AI slop, not today satan” in about two seconds flat
Found out about this fake meetup through @nyfurs.org . The "meet" is just bait to get furry hate content for a livestream known as Sam Hyde's Fishtank.

Does plonderphonics hit like it used to? If The Avalanches “Since I Left You” dropped today would anyone recognize it or just think it was AI?

I picked up this record from 1989 yesterday and it blew my mind, dedicated to the founder of the chaos computer club likely murdered by the CIA during the Cold War.

Here's a lovely personal story that got me actually thinking about my 9/11, sent by a close friend who helped made NE home for me:

"the same city that taught me I was not alone also taught me that a place can choose to be brave before its people are ready"

When the world felt uncertain, Boston gave me a place to become myself

I used to believe that the companies/people instrumentalizing social media didn't know their data was all bullshit, but I came to realize not only are they extremely aware, they are working to normalize the idea that facts are irrelevant. The truth is whatever you say it is online.
As a concrete example: one of the early HCI studies on social media and sentiment analysis leaned heavily on reading the uptick of fear and negativity online shortly after the 9/11 attacks.

My overwhelming memory of 9/11 (I was in my 20s, and had just moved to Boston for grad school) was watching, in real time, the powers that be transition from “we’re all really scared and confused and nobody knows what’s going on” into “oh wow, we can weaponized that for the next 30 years”

Almost everything makes more sense as a gift economy, and the thing is the entire project is about convincing you otherwise.

I would feel less salty about this if I felt that any companies actually gave us value, but they largely don't.
“Mathematics only makes sense as a gift economy. It has no trade secrets. Substituting a monetizable ersatz culture for the one evolved through historical experience is a particularly insidious form of knowledge collapse.”

Mathematician Michael Harris on the AI companies coming for math:
Knowledge Collapse
AI companies are racing to mechanize mathematics. Where does that leave human understanding?

It’s not life itself that sucks

we all deserve warm shelter, hot food, and cold drinks. We all deserve to be heard. We all deserve to be able to relax. We deserve a right to free education and clean resources.

it’s just that we’re being constantly exploited. Life could be a lot better.

My ebay account is older than some friends (1998). Today it went tits-up and I am lost in AI hell, none of their automated systems can understand my email address, my phone number or the fact that this is a real account, it's just old.

I did not survive Y2K apparently, it just took 26 years to hit
