Maybe this is my attempt to become a site that’s just all lists but I did some old fashioned blogging on 5 things that I liked in the comics that I read this week.

I read a lot of comics this week. Here are a handful of small things in different books that really jumped out at me. From Time2 Omnibus by Howard Chaykin, Ken Bruzenak, and Linda Lessmann (2022, Ima...

Breathe in the Sickness of Rob Williams & Henry Flint's Judge Dredd: And To The Sea Return
These comics kick you, stab you with a rusty blade, and then try to gouge your eyes out. And you love every second of it.

For Day Of Dredd, here are my recent forays into a couple of really different stories, starting with A Better World. Could the Judges actually make a better world Just through reallocation of resource?

And then rounded up the month by exploring Deniz Camp and Javier Rodríguez’s Absolute Martian Manhunter, one of the best and most dizzying comics that DC has published in a long time.

In terms of brand new comics, Darcy Van Poelgeest and Ian Bertram’s The Karman Blade felt transformational. Ian Bertram took his art to another level in this first issue.

The Karman Blade #1 isn’t just a comic that you read; it’s a comic that you breathe in.  It clings and scratches your throat.  It claws at your skin and pecks away at your eyes.

The month started with Pierre-Henry Gomont’s excellent thriller Soviet Land. I would really like to see more of his comics translated to English.

I haven’t read any Appleseed in ages and really don’t remember much of it so this edition of Shirow Masamune’s 2nd classic (along with Ghost in the Shell) needs to be a must read.

This is a hodgepodge collection featuring the annual (I actually prefer the James Harren story to the DWJ one) a one-shot, Absolute Joker, and an appearance by Absolute Wonder Woman. I don't know if this series has actually lived up to its potential yet.

I'm cautiously optimistic about Tom King and Gabriel Hernádez Walta's Six of Us. The high concept of it sounds good, a murder mystery taking place behind the scenes of a popular sitcom. Going to give this one a shot but it's on a short leash.

May write about this in the future but debuting both the new Legion of Super-Heroes and Doom Patrol on the same day was genius (Teen Titans may also be part of this but honestly, flipped through it and nothing jumped out at me to make it a must read.)

Thread over on the personal account.
I remember picking this up 20 years ago today and the guy at the comic shop trying to talk me out of it. But having a passing awareness of Gillen and McKelvie, I was determined to leave the shop with Phonogram #1.

1/6
It's only now I remember today is the 20th anniversary of this coming out. There's not really words, though I'm sure I'll find a few thousand for the newsletter. "We are twice as far from Rue Britannia as Rue Britannia was from Britpop" is certainly a thought. The other is: thank you, McK.
