Has anyone seen the latest PRESIDENT EVIL movie? It's a dystopian tale about the current US administration..

I take the AI existential threat seriously. But somehow I'm much more afraid of Trump killing us all than #AI.

@karaswisher.bsky.social and @profgalloway.com take issue with Trump’s account of being carried to safety by firefighters in the aftermath of 9/11.

My naive expectations for the 21st century didn’t involve nearly as many Nazi parties garnering popular support, careful parsings of whether this or that policy or group was really Nazi, or powerful figures in this country exhibiting Nazi sympathies.

LLMs are going to fundamentally change what scholarship is. Pumping out true propositions used to be a viable career. Now much of that can be offloaded, leaving scholars the tasks of understanding, synthesizing, and deciding what is valuable. Goes for math, philosophy, parts of physics.
I find the view that philosophy is supposed to just pump out the maximum number of true propositions (and that LLMs can help with this) completely anathema. This is a humanistic field where we engage in collective inquiry together. LLMs destroy the collective trust at the base of that

Four billion years ago, Earth was a sterile rock. Today it is teeming with life, from simple microbes to extraordinarily complex societies that span the globe.

How does that happen? I'm writing a book about the answer: Life Unbounded, from Quanta Books.

The fact that stuff like this is not treated like a five-alarm fire is another signal of how close we are to a possible end to our republic. No institution willing and able to curtail a lawless administration.
Latest example of "You Can Just Do Stuff" governing taken to the extreme. The judge can't physically enforce his or her own ruling, the White House controls law enforcement and Congress won't impeach.
1) DHS asks a federal judge for a warrant to hoover up private data from journalists, activists, and trade unions.

2) Judge denies because it is an obvious violation of the 1st and 4th Amendments with no justification.

3) DHS issues its own "Administrative Warrant" and sucks up the data anyway.

The dismantling of science/education is up there with the erosion of international trust as long-lasting disaster legacies of the Trump administration that will not be reversed any time soon.
Trump 2.0 has blown up US scientific research in a way that will take decades to roll back. Labs that took years to build have closed, young people have left science. NYT Mag published a long report on Dismantling Cancer Research.

Why does Ross Douthat lie like this?

This week's NOVA is Decoding the Universe: Quantum. I am one of the talking heads!

I think physicists are going to struggle talking about quantum mechanics as long as we think of the quantum state - not our observational outcomes - as representing what is real.
