Congratulations to Chris Fagan who joins Frank "Checker Hughes" as the only two V/AFL coaches to retire after a Premiership Hat Trick
Hughes at Melbourne Football Club 1939, 40 & 41
Fagan at Brisbane Lions 2024, 25 & 26

Will Fagan come back for one more like Hughes in 1948?

1954 a year of communist spies & royal tours, the race of the century & a race around Australia, a Grand Final scandal that would forever change the game and, for the first time ever, the Australian code would be shown on TV, not in Melbourne but in the USA.

Congratulations to Chris Fagan on achieving his 3rd Jock McHale Medal with the Brisbane Lion's 2024, 2025, 2026 Premiership Hat Trick.
Like every Jock McHale medal winner since 1950, his Coaching DNA goes all the way back to Jock McHale himself

Reposting the Premiership Hat Trick Marathon Podcasts in honour of Brisbane Lions 2024, 25, 26. Outstanding effort. Looking forward to doing podcast episodes on these 3 Grand Finals but it's going to be a while before I catch up. Enjoy these earlier premiership hat tricks

Happy Grand Final Day
No better place to be

Only one coach can take home the Jock McHale medal but worth noting that every premiership coach since 1950 can trace thie rcoaching DNA back to Jock McHale. Who will take the medal home in 2026?

Congratulations to Lachie Neale on winning the 2026 Hall Dunkley medal for getting out of a suspension for the AFL Grand Final 😁

Brisbane in their 4th GF in a row at the MCG so worth remembering what Fitzroy thought in 1905 of Grand Finals always at MCG
Fitzroy Press noted citizens would have a large cost in aggregate of travelling expenses "To those outside the league executive it does appear to be a one sided arrangement"

It's the best week of the year, AFL Grand Final Week. If you want to remember past Grand Finals, who won, captain, coach, umpire, the pre-game entertainment, half time sprint and how much it cost to get a ticket there is just one place to go.

Some poor behaviour at the MCG after the Hawthorn and Brisbane game but standards have been falling for a long time. In 1954 an older Member despaired of a younger man in an open necked shirt booing the umpire after the Grand Final. Hopefully the Members will behave at the #aflgrand_final

Broadcasts outside the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Grand Final Day are standard these days but 3AW Football was the first radio station to do a live Grand Final broadcast outside the game from 5.00AM to 9.AM before 1954 Grand Final between Bulldogs and Melb.

100 years ago Melbourne's Ivor Warne Smith won the first of his two Brownlow Medals. Will the 2026 winner have a club poet create a poem to celebrate?

The Brownlow medal gets a lot more attention now than when it wast first announced in 1924 but one thing that doesn't change in 1924 or 2026 is debate on whether the umpires are the right people to vote each week.
