Moby the giant marrow weighed in at 107.3lbs/48.7kg in the guess the weight competition at Kingfisher Farmshop yesterday. The winner picked up £50 to spend in-store. £195 raised for Royal Marsden. Moby lost a bit of weight over 4 weeks but is still 27lbs heavier than the 2026 winner at Harrogate 😉

I've got two lads (year 9 & year 11) starting here on sunday to help me with the garden & allotment. An allotment is hard work, add a garden, and it's impossible to maintain both. I've decided to employ some keen youngsters to pass on some growing skills.

It's good that baby sweetcorn can be homegrown and save on airmiles from India. It's also good that it's harvested before pollination so it can be planted in a single row that Mr Badger has no interest in... but my goodness, you don't get much from all the effort 😂

Another day spent fixing slightly dropped terrace paving, had to adjust the sleepers and add 3 bags of sand, plus attach some decking wood to the sleepers. It needed doing to accommodate MrsGrow's new egg chair birthday present. I am somewhat tired 😴😂

Busy day levelling up the front garden seating area, has needed an extra row of sleepers for a few years. Screens going up next, been stored in the shed for 3 years, chemotherapy held that job up.

I know I'm getting old... but people do love Long Meadow as the heart of the show. GW is not just a horticultural programme, it's a feel good 'take me to the host's garden paradise at the end of the week' experience. When you strip that out, it loses character.

Last week, we had a mad frog calling out for 3 nights on the trot. This week, frog spawn! As females don't generally call out, does this mean our male got lucky? Hope so. 8 years that pond has delivered nothing but dragonflies - which is nice, but FROGS!

Sparrowhawk outside in the garden enjoying a winter meal of pigeon. I don't know if it caught the pigeon or just got lucky, because that pigeon has been lying out there since lunchtime.
