A steady shower of rain Saturday interrupted a string of events planned to celebrate the 300th anniversary of Columbia. While a fireworks show originally planned for Saturday evening in the borough was postponed and an Art in the Park event at Locust Street Park ended early, the Albatwitch Harvest Festival at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center held on despite the rain. Vendors crowded under canopies and packed into the River Trails building with tables full of items inspired by Columbia’s own cryptid, the Albatwitch. A cryptid is an animal that is reported to have been seen, like Sasquatch or the Loch Ness Monster, but has not been proven by science to exist. The Albatwitch, according to local folklore, is a small hairy primatelike creature that lives around Chickies Rock north of Columbia. The creature was described by speakers at the festival as being roughly 4 feet tall and known for stealing apples and throwing their cores at people who get too close. Organizer Rick Fisher, an author and paranormal investigator, said he had a sighting of what he believed to be an Albatwitch in 2002 while he was driving on Route 23 toward Marietta and was inspired to create a festival around it after seeing the success of the Mothman Festival in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. For over a decade Fisher had organized an Albatwitch festival in Columbia with Chris Vera, president of the Columbia Historic Preservation Society. Following disputes between Vera and Columbia Borough Council, the event was moved to Wrightsville in 2025. Fisher bowed out of the festival when it moved to the west shore of the Susquehanna. Over the past year, Fisher said he was told by residents and Borough Council members that the event should move back to Columbia, where it started. “People started coming up to me, telling me it should really be brought back to Columbia,” Fisher said. “It belongs here. It’s a Columbia thing.” Fisher said that in 2024, the last time the festival was held in Columbia, the event drew around 8,000 people. He estimated that attendance and number of vendors was lower Saturday due to the weather and cancellation of other 300th-anniversary events. Speakers at the event covered all things cryptid, from what goes into investigating Sasquatch sightings to the history of the Albatwitch legend. Organizers said they also provided space to highlight the work of Columbia’s nonprofits. Musical performances at the event were organized by the Susquehanna River Creative Conspiracy, a nonprofit that hosts performances of local and youth musicians. Nonprofit local news isn't free! MAKE YOUR DONATION TODAY Susquehanna Creative Conspiracy founder TJ Carrozza said he was happy community events such as the Albatwitch festival attract people to the area. “It’s great to see people come out from 45 minutes to an hour away and just get the opportunity to check out what Columbia has to offer,” Carrozza said. Brenda Hartman was at the festival as a volunteer of the Columbia Cat Action Team, an organization that aims to ethically address the number of feral cats in the borough. Despite the rain, Hartman said she was happy to see the community turn out for the event following several months of tragedies in the borough, including several untimely deaths and a destructive tornado touching down. “Columbia feels a little broken right now and it's a shame because it's such a great little community,” Hartman said. “There’s so many people that care about this little river town.” Events celebrating the 300th anniversary of Columbia will continue into October with two more installments of a free speaker series on local history planned for Oct. 4 and 6. The twice postponed fireworks show will be rescheduled, organizers said; however, a date has yet to be determined.

Netflix is reportedly developing a comedy series "loosely inspired" by an alleged college fraternity drug ring that will be written by and star Charlie Hall. The fictional project is being developed under writer-producer Alec Berg's overall deal with Netflix, according to Deadline. The series was rooted in allegations surrounding what authorities described as a cocaine-trafficking operation at two off-campus Penn State fraternity houses, the media outlet noted. It was not described as a dramatization of any specific case, per the outlet. Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday announced charges in August against 14 people in connection with the case, which involves multiple college students and the frat houses. Authorities said cocaine was allegedly brought from Philadelphia and New York, cut and packaged at the Delta Upsilon and Sigma Chi fraternity houses, and then distributed to Penn State students. Thirteen of those charged were current or former Penn State students at the time of the alleged conduct in 2023 and 2024, the attorney general's office said. "This was a coordinated and highly-profitable drug-trafficking crew revolving around two senior members of the fraternities, other fraternity brothers, and pledges," Sunday previously said in a news release. "In fact, according to the evidence uncovered, cutting and packaging cocaine was, for some pledges, an indoctrination into the fraternities." No title, additional cast members, production schedule or release date has been announced for Hall's Netflix project, according to Deadline. The outlet reported that Berg, a co-creator of HBO's "Barry" and an executive producer on "Silicon Valley," will executive produce and serve as supervising writer, while Amy Solomon also will executive produce through Berg's production company. Hall has appeared in "The Sex Lives of College Girls," "Bel-Air" and Apple TV's "Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed." Berg's Netflix agreement follows a lengthy run at HBO, where he also worked on "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "Seinfeld."
