Oh I shd add: Deisseroth’s work was (say it w me!) supported with public funding through federal science agencies incl NIH, NSF, and DARPA. And I daresay few political deciders in 2004 would have been excited to put algal proteins in HEK cells or neurons. Scientists knew, though.

The answer to this question is a very loud and resounding NO. And neurobiologists don't just consider the notion of a "lizard brain" in humans misleading. It is wrong. Very wrong. The only lizard brain is that found within lizards.

Do humans really have a ‘lizard brain’ lurking beneath our rational minds?
It’s a powerful analogy that captured the popular imagination, but the biological reality is quite different

Our new paper on bird vocal amplitude is out in @sse-evolution.bsky.social !

Across 123 species, we found two new contenders for world’s loudest bird: bare-throated bellbird and seriema

Along with the white bellbird, both can reach jackhammer-level amplitudes!

SciENcv docs before that date may fail validation in eRA Commons delaying or blocking submission.

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

I'll to come right out and say it: statistical extrapolation is *fine*. One of the most useful ways to understand the present and anticipate the future is measuring the things that happened in the past, find the correlations among them, and extrapolate likely future outcomes from those correlations.

So rather than increase faculty payroll and lower student:teacher ratios, UMass would rather spend it on Claude. I would argue that a better investment would be hiring 100-200 tenure-line faculty.
According to a meeting I was in, UMass estimates that if the capacity of these tools were maxed out by student, faculty, staff users, the total cost to the university would be $130,000/day, or about $47 million / year.

Neuronal response properties in the songbird auditory system change when they become parents, tuned more to chick calls! Such a fun study from @prolactingrl.bsky.social in the JNE Special Issue on Parenting. Expect great things from her new lab at UMichigan!
I'm excited to share that my postdoc paper from the @healeylab.bsky.social lab was published today! Here we show that zebra finch parents have stronger auditory responses to chick calls compared to non-parents and that females tend to be more selective in these responses! Also~my 1st ephys paper!! ⬇️
