I’ve read two Josh Malerman novels, and I don’t remember a single fucking detail about either. There are short stories i read a decade ago that left more of an impression than his novel i read last year. How does his work keep getting adapted? It’s like someone telling you their bland dream.

When I was a kid and I saw The Matrix in theaters, the audience laughed so hard at the “you think that’s air you’re breathing?” line that I assumed I was missing some deeper joke, and thought to myself “what, is he breathing something gross? Is he somehow breathing poop?”

Stephen King short stories are such an autumnal staple for me. I used to live near a coffee shop that was in a converted Victorian house, and in the fall I’d go and read King short stories on their porch, drink coffee for hours as the leaves fell. That’s what autumn brings to mind for me.

Every now and then I think about how in 2022 I saw a car that was absolutely covered in Boogaloo Boys (alt right internet hate group) bumper stickers, and I think it’s cool how every Boogaloo Boy had their hearts pulled from their chests and their skulls flayed of flesh by unseen spirits.

When I came out to my transphobic mom, I told her that all of my friends were very supportive. She told me to be careful of only hanging out with queer ppl, because it gives you a false sense of how the world feels about you. Gotta be one of the saddest things I’ve ever heard.
