It is cognitive surrender if you use it in place of learning something yourself. I hypothesize that not only does AI make you learn less (at this point this is just scientific consensus), but AI usage also makes people believe they are yet learning.

Im back in academia, not as a researcher but as a software engineer. I’m really really glad to be not in corporate anymore. For all its faults, I share at least some values that are generally held in academia which I’ve found to be pretty important for my work happiness

For the same output there is less friction and less productive failure using LLMs than not, so you are learning less for the same output. It’s as simple as that. Also “feeling like you’re learning” != learning. And coding is still where you learn the most with LLMs, with writing it’s way worse.
something has flipped for me. I'm over saying "I'm not so sure" about posts like this. I am sure: the claim that LLMs eliminate all the friction that leads to learning is just wrong. don't we still have plenty to do? more than before! so there's no shortage of friction, it's just different friction

Listen, AI has a bunch of problems. Ecological, intellectual property, cognitive atrophy, absolute disaster in education, but it is NOT useless.

Mijn toevoeging: intersectionalisme focust zich inderdaad erg op taal en dan ook nog op de verkeerde manier. Ben het met Butler eens dat taal handelingen altijd performatief zijn (metacommuniceren of iemand je sociaal erkent) en stigmatiserend taalgebruik daarom echt schadelijk kan zijn. Maar…
