No work should be unpaid. If a criminal isn't a danger to society, why imprison them at all? Fines and community service are surely sufficient? Community service isn't work and this article confuses the two and makes it sound like work is a punishment rather than something satisfying and worthwhile.
Work offering skills, training, dignity, pay, opportunity, an easing into normal life, yes. Work that is forced, performative, and humiliating - will achieve what, exactly? And jobs should not be replacing those councils should be able to fund www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
