Happy 46th birthday to … us! Our musically curious founder Ted Perry famously drove taxis at night to support his label in its early days.

Rameau introduces an imitation of nature in 'Le rappel des oiseaux' (roughly translated as 'The conference of the birds'). This piece was most likely inspired by Rameau's friendship with the Jesuit Père Castel, who discussed with the composer the phenomenon and study of birdsong.

'I can hear a piece of music that I find beautiful and touching for the first time and feel nostalgia, not for my own childhood, but for the childhood of the world, for that sense of roots which I think is in all human culture.'—Stephen Hough

In liner notes that give every sense that she has been playing and considering these works for half a lifetime, @angejsb.bsky.social reminds us that the first harpsichordist to play all 555 or so sonatas declared that Kk208 was the one he'd choose if only allowed one Scarlatti sonata.

Inspired by the artistic world of Versailles during the reign of Louis XIV, Mishka Rushdie Momen's new album brings together works by Couperin, Rameau and Jacquet de La Guerre, a pioneering composer whose music remains far less widely known than that of her male contemporaries.

Listening to Mishka Rushdie Momen, who plays François Couperin, Jean-Philippe Rameau, and Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre. A new favorite musician. This album is out today. Worth a serious listen. Just beautiful. A perfect time to crank up your Atmos speakers.

Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre's harpsichord pieces are adventurous and florid, combining dramatic Italianate touches with French rhetorical gestures. The Suite in G minor begins with an unmeasured prelude, recalling those by Louis Couperin.

Minsoo writes: 'We often say that a great work of art contains a journey through life, but this is more than life. This is the journey of a universe: a cosmic world that Bach created and that is left to us. I think it’s a gift for humanity.'
