The Red Cross and Red Crescent emblems are meant to protect people helping others. Under international humanitarian law, they are recognized as symbols of neutral and impartial humanitarian action. Any attack against these emblems, or against the people who wear them, is unacceptable.

The IFRC mourns with deep sorrow the killing of Abolfazl Dahanavi, who was only 20 years old.
Abolfazl is the fourth Iranian Red Crescent volunteer killed in the line of duty since the conflict began on 28 February 2026.

One year ago, eight medics from the Palestine Red Crescent Society were killed on duty in Gaza.
They were responding to wounded people, they were humanitarians dedicated to saving lives. Their ambulances were clearly marked; their red uniforms should have protected them.
