My Toulouse adventure started at O’Hare airport. I got a beer and a dog, relaxed in the air conditioning, and enjoyed some SRV. For a few glorious minutes, I forgot I was in an airport.

Here's the first of my sketches from the Urban Sketchers symposium in Toulouse, France. Known as the Pink City for its pinkish terracotta bricks, Toulouse is the capital of the Occitanie region of southern France.

Here’s another vacation sketch. On our past two vacations, we watched cars drive by, pull off the road next to the No Parking signs, and get stuck in the sand. This year, the sand was roped off, so I had to get this in my sketch.

The Sunday of the Chicago Urban Sketchers seminar, I went back to Palette and Chisel for Amanda’s talk about her reportage grant. She walked an ancient pilgrimage route through Italy, documenting a disease that is killing olive trees. What a powerful talk!

My afternoon sketch walk ended at the Chicago Water Tower. Every time I’m here, I’ve managed to forget just how tall 182.5 feet is. Also, a fun fact: this tower was one of the few buildings to survive the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.

After lunch on the Saturday of the Chicago Urban Sketchers seminar, I joined the sketch walk. We didn’t have much time (~30 mins) here, at Connors Park, so I worked with minimal planning. Building is Archbishop Quigley Center.

My second sketch from the Chicago Urban Sketchers seminar is Lance, who had to compete with a guy with a microphone spewing hatred. Security couldn’t require the guy with the mic to leave, and, eventually, the police came and the guy with the mic left.
