Cast copper alloy long-nosed hound figurine of Roman, possibly fourth century, date. Thought to have perhaps been a votive offering.

Before the pier was built, #Ryde was inaccessible to ships at low tide. In his ‘Journal of a Voyage to Lisbon’, Henry Fielding in 1754 writes ‘there was, at low water, an impassible gulf… of deep mud, which could neither be traversed by walking or swimming.

Remains of the 13th century tower of St Helen’s Church, #IsleofWight which served parish and priory during the medieval period. Mostly lost to the sea, the remains were repurposed in the 18th century as a sea mark, shown as "White Tower" on 1780s chart. #MedievalMonday #MaritimeMonday #MapMonday

Water from wells at the engine house in Pumphouse Lane was pumped to the water tower that stood near the top of Victoria Grove, built to provide a head of water at the top of the town. Demolished in the early 1980s after being derelict for some years.

For anyone watching the racing at Cowes Week, check out the 4 lion statues on the Esplanade and at Egypt Point, erected in 1894 by the West Cowes Local Board of Health as part of the esplanade improvements. Two are Grade II listed, see #HistoricEngland #NHLE 1222859 & 1267595

‘Noah’s Nuts’: organic and gravel sediments laid down by the Old Western Yar now sometimes exposed in the eroding cliff face along the #IsleofWight SW coast. Funded by Historic England we obtained C14 dates of c8000 cal BC for hazelnuts from these deposits #archaeology #nature #FestivalofArchaeology

The #submergedforest at Wootton-Quarr is dated by dendrochronology to 3463-2694 cal BC with an earlier floating sequence of 268 years. Trees grew under increasingly stressful conditions due to rising sea-levels.

At Rock Roman Villa pellets from a barn owl nesting in the building when it was ruinous in the 4th century contained bones of bats, mice, shrews, birds and amphibians, giving clues to the environment in which it foraged. Report in #IsleofWight HER.
