“The precisely controlled movements of handwriting lead to patterns in the brain that promote learning. The brain opens, deepens and enriches itself. There is in it (speaking subjectively) an exhilaration and a feeling of homecoming.”
Anne Carson · Beware the man whose handwriting sways like a reed in the wind

Mystery saint!

I've got a mystery saint on a hand reliquary that is supposedly 16th century and Spanish. Can't share the image, but the inscription says:

SANTA RATLRINA MARTIRIS

So who is St Ratlrina the Martyr? Any ideas?

Why do fascists hate art?

Art asks you to step into another's shoes, to consider what the artist was trying to express and to understand who they are. Art is, above all, an act of humanity, a shared moment of vulnerability, a request for empathy, sympathy and compassion.

Sorry to read this. Nini was researching Irish connections to enslavement and abolition long before anyone else in the field and we all owe her such an enormous debt for doing all that foundational work. It was one of the great, not-heralded-enough, contributions to modern Irish history.
We have heard the very sad news that Nini Rodgers died yesterday, after a period spent in a nursing home. Her former colleagues in the School remember her fondly, while others will have known Nini through her ground-breaking research on the history of slavery and Ireland.
