In 2023 Musk promised X/Twitter would support anyone whose employment was terminated over social media posts. Musk has previously personally funded Tommy Robinson's legal bill.

This is different; this is a corporation funding the defence against *a criminal prosecution* in a European court

An extraordinary statement from X/Twitter's official Global Affairs account confirms that the company funded Kirk Loco's legal defence against a charge of online harassment over a tweet he sent in 2024.

I don't think we've ever seen such an intervention by a social media platform before in Ireland

Comment & Analysis: The planned changes to the South Circular Road project in Limerick seem like a reasonable compromise, but some details should be adjusted, and it's also an opportunity to improve cycling connectivity. Why do the planned changes seem like a reasonable compromise? Providing two-way access as planned for around 120 metres from Quin Street to Laurel Hill Ave would reduce the number of motorists who need to access the bollard-controlled section, between Summerville Ave and Laurel Hill Ave, while likely maintaining the low-traffic nature of the area between Laurel Hill Ave and the start of the cycle path at Quin Street.

IBIKEBoo! Today’s the day to demand safer streets while dressed as witches, goblins and ghoulies
Today -- Friday 30th October -- is your chance to both dress up to scare and also demand safer streets in Dublin. The IBikeBoo Halloween version of Dublin's monthly IBikeBop critical mass kicks off at 6pm sharp today from Parnell Square North. Organisers, I Bike Dublin, are calling on members of the public to both dress up and "Join #CriticalMassDub for a 1-hour cycle demanding safer Dublin bike infrastructure!" The relaxed and music-filled cycle around Dublin City Centre is described as family-friendly.

Well designed infrastructure enables safe mobility for the young, the old, and those simply seeking reassurance from the constant threat of cars. Walking and biking shouldn't feel like a balance beam over crocodiles. It should feel naturally insulated from lethal danger.

A Limerick councillor has hit out at council management after officials brought forward a plan to adjust a section of the South Circular Road active travel project, which is currently under construction. Limerick City and County Council's planned changes are understood to focus mainly on limiting the number of people who need access to the section of the street controlled by automated bollards, while also allowing two-way access for a short section of the street for some residents.

London Calling: Cycle paths at bus stops: Scary? Like watching paint dry? Or both?
Comment & Analysis / Long read: Dramatic videos shared on social media show two-wheelers zooming by on cycle paths behind bus stops, but when I visit these bus stops, the reality can more often feel as edgy as watching paint dry. How can the contrast be so large? What I'm talking about here is where the layout includes a footpath, a cycle path, a bus stop platform area, and then the carriageway.

And everybody will say "it cannot happen here" or "our city isn't like that", but it has happened elswhere too -- this is not a one-off:
Never forget that when Seoul, Korea removed the Cheonggyecheon expressway in 2003 and replaced it with a restored stream, 1000 acre park and improved public transit, not only did it TRANSFORM the city’s public life and economic success, but the car traffic got better.

The car traffic got BETTER.

Dublin City Council's planned Gardiner Street cycle route and public realm enhancement is set for public consultation soon, a report to councillors said in September. The Dublin City Centre Transport Plan included proposals for a two-way cycle path with a green buffer in 2024. The overall plan did not require councillors to sign off on it with a vote, but those against it pushed it to a vote more than once.

Should Irish politicians lead by example and wear high-vis clothing everywhere?
-- Pedestrians should wear high-vis in urban areas, even on the edge of Dublin City Centre, according to the Assistant Garda Commissioner for roads policing and community engagement. Comment & Analysis: Up to now, when Irish authorities have talked about people walking wearing high-vis clothing, people have brushed it off and dismissed that they mean in urban areas too. But their advice has generalised for a long time.

New trial asking how to “open up streets for children to more easily, more safely, play on?”
DCC Beta -- the Dublin City Council's testing labs -- is trialling organised 'play streets' to give space, for a limited time, back to children's play. Play streets are residential streets that are temporarily closed to through traffic so children can play safely outdoors in cities, often where children once played before cars dominated streets. The modus operandi of DCC Beta is to basically take concepts such as Bike Bunkers, art on utility boxes, and cargo bike share and test them within their local physical, legal and administrative context.

-- Local councillors welcome project, with one stressing wider greenway need to go ahead. After repeated delays on projects to upgrade the Royal Canal to modern greenway standards between Phibsborough and Ashtown, Waterways Ireland is stepping in with an €850,000 upgrade to the shared canal path between Broombridge and Ashtown. The works include resurfacing of the towpath, localised widening, and replacing kissing gates with bollards, while chicane barriers will also be added.

But urgent action can still limit the overshoot and bring warming back to 1.5°C by 2100.

Current policies, however, put the 🌎 on course for up to 2.8°C this century.

Kildare school objects to opening pedestrian gate, claiming it’d be a public route, but planners say it’s only for school access
An extra access point for active travel is the norm at many schools across Ireland, but one school's board of management is so against this concept that it is asking An Coimisiún Pleanála to overturn the planning conditions by Kildare County Council planners that the gate be opened for school access. The council granted Scoil Mhuire Community School, a secondary school in Clane, planning permission to construct a new two-storey extension.
