Today is the anniversary of the infamous 1871 Chicago fire, as many as 300 dead. But it’s also the anniversary of the less famous Peshtigo, Wisc., fire, also in 1871, with as many as 2,500 dead.
People jumped into the Peshtigo River to try to survive the 3-day fire that covered 1,875 square miles.

Still the deadliest wildfire in U.S. history: the Oct 8, 1871, Peshtigo, Wisc., fire killed as many as 2,500. Same day as Chicago fire, but with many more deaths and no cow to blame. Slash-and-burn land management resulted in too much burn. A museum and graveyard for the victims stands in town.
