Mainly music.
I haven’t heard all of Dean McPhee’s albums, but as far as I can tell this is his deepest release yet. Highly recommended!

I set up a Gary Higgins show for Friday, November 6th at the Somerville Armory Café. Spread the word and come on down if you are in the Boston area.

This track is magical and may very well be my favorite Angel Olsen song. It’s a shame it’s only available on a bonus CD that came with her second album, so many may never have heard it.

A legit bar burner with a message that still rings through.

I decided to join the @lidders.bsky.social Buzzy Linhart Appreciation Society. The bottom two LPs I’ve had since the 90s. The top three set me back $15 at Angry Mom last week.

It intrigues me that Buzzy played vibes with Fred Neil, which never got recorded. I imagine that Tim Buckley took note

Any Curt Newbury fans out there? Not quite Gene Clark or Gary Higgins level, but this is a damn fine folk rock LP.

Sad news! I just got word that Jeff Conolly of the Lyres has passed away. I’ve booked his band in the 80s and worked with him in record stores. A great guy. Lyres was far away the best of the many bands of that mid-80s garage explosion. All sweat, all heart and great songs.

This brand new Gary Stewart demos LP is stellar. The final track, “Williamson County” is one of the most devastating songs you’ll ever hear. Dug up by Mark Linn for his Delmore Recording Society label. Earlier responsible for top archival releases on Karen Dalton and Peter Walker.

Great US exploitation pop psych LP produced by Bob Crewe that sounds more like UK bands like The Zombies and July. Especially side 1 is flawless.

"The only true ‘60s hardcore record I know", according to Jello Biafra, the singer of the Dead Kennedys. He is referring to this fantastic song by the — yes, indeed — Dutch band Sound Of Imker from 1969. Killer Nederbeat track.

No more Brazilian soccer on the world stage. Perhaps a good reason to take this one for a spin next.

Absolutely agree. I’m hoping they’ll tour the east coast one of these days.
SML is one of the great modern jazz groups of our time.

Nereya Otieno spoke to the LA-based trio about their origins, the magic and terror of improvised music, the shaping of their sound and their new masterpiece "Spontaneous Music Live."

The two newly unearthed, side-long tracks on this reissue are slowly going to fantastic places. 🔥

There are currently some impressive newer artists that have picked up the classic 70s MPB gauntlet. Ricardo Dias Gomes, Wolfgang Pérez and Domenico Lancellotti are three faves. This 2LP by Raphael Gimenes is also highly recommended and gets better with every spin.

A fan of Egberto Gismonti or Milton Nascimento will dig this fab Brazilian prog LP by A Barca Do Sol. It’s just rotten that a label doing all these fine MPB reissues is releasing them in limited quantities in a no exports, subscription/record club type deal.

I’m happy as a clam with this new BASIC LP. They’ll be in town in two weeks as well. Looking forward to it.

I can’t get enough of these Brazilian nuggets from the 70s.

A damn fine Stax LP! Has a devastating opening track.

Fantastic jazzy, proggy MPB, released in 1973. Will more than appeal if you like Clube Da Esquina and Lo Borges.

I’ve digging the Stranglers’ strangest album since the day it was released, but somehow it only has gotten better with time. I hear a lot of Beefheart and early-Devo.

My favorite release of the year so far. Bram Devens’ music has a unique inner logic that never fails to get me. I doesn’t matter if he plays electric guitar, acoustic guitar, or like here, a dubby piano. FYI: Very affordable US shipping of this Belgium LP on Bandcamp. @okrainarecords.bsky.social

These two Edwards Hand LPs are underrated. They don’t quite reach Badfinger or Parachute levels, but are definitely worth your time. Still cheap and both produced by George Martin no less.

Mesmerizing NIS show tonight. One of the best bands going right now.
