I forgot the name of it because it was when I was very young. Likely an independent video store. It moved into where a CVS was on my childhood street. There lady who would hype up the Disney movies as we'd check them out. That's what I remember, it's a blurry memory now

I have never felt older than the longing I just felt for weird little video stores because none of the films I want to watch are streaming in the US but I know I could've rented them on VHS if this was 1999!

I think the main problem with this advice is it's usually about chasing mainstream / popular at the time fandoms & not about engaging with the fandoms you actually enjoy. So regardless if you go original or stay fanart-oriented it'd result in a log of art you don't feel anything about later on
Thinking about the advice "draw fanart to get an following for your original work". I never liked it. Why purposely build an audience that's not interested in the art you like to make?
