I hate this so much. The BBC should be providing good quality, good value programmes that the private market won't cover. You and Yours (which I kind of hate), Thinking Allowed and Free Thinking are exactly the sort of programming that the BBC is i) good at, ii) not haemorrhaging money to make.
BBC to cut raft of Radio 4 programmes including You and Yours
The corporation said it would be investing in a new consumer programme, while announcing more cuts.

You’d have to be in thrall to the narrowest, most blinkered model of economics to believe that axeing Free Thinking and Thinking Allowed made sense. The amount of goodwill programmes like this earn from the BBC’s core supporters is way out of proportion to the pennies they cost to make.

Privatisation in a nutshell:

1) Steal from us something we own.

2) Sell us back an inferior service

3) Charge us a higher price.

The pattern is the same everywhere: royal mail, water, railways, the NHS, public services, council services…
Failures of privatisation.

Royal Mail to cut up to 2,500 jobs

Foreign-owned RM doesn't meet letter delivery targets even after regulator lowered them.

Postage: 1st class, £1.80, 2nd class 91p.
When privatized in 2013: 1st class 60p; 2nd class 50p.

Poor service at triple price. Customers fleeced.

Coming on top of the axing of The World Tonight it really seems as if #BBC are determined to wreck R4. Especially depressing that Thinking Allowed will go - SFAIK it's the only programme in UK media dedicated to (mainly academic) social science research.

Dreamed about some guys called The Intuitive Six who are like a Famous Five gang but they're adults, and they don't look for clues and so on; just solve everything with good guesses. I'll let you know how this goes but I think it's likely I'll never have to work again.

A second Brexit referendum is a truly stupid idea. Straight to rejoin. No fucking about. There’s no logical argument, economic or otherwise, for not rejoining. The British electorate has proven that they don’t have a clue and are easily duped by disinformation campaigns and foreign interference.

Those of us in positions of responsibility have a duty to fix what's broken, even when it's uncomfortable.

It’s not 25 years anymore, it’s 40. They’re paying 9% more tax almost their entire working lives because, thanks to interest, the loan gets bigger each year. Makes it very difficult to buy a property/have children etc which we all need them to be able to do or the economic pyramid collapses.

If anyone thinks you can’t remove the triple lock whilst being fine with charging our kids 6% interest on the colossal loans they need to take for a higher education we got for free, then frankly I don’t care much for your opinion. Either we’re all important or we live in an angry, divided society.
