YES! The Hastert Rule is THE SOLE REASON the House did not pass immigration reform in 2013-2014 when Boehner had every opportunity to pass immigration reform. Even factoring out the pedophilia (which you shouldn't), he did just as much damage as Gingrich did.
Amidst all the fair criticisms for how awful Hastert was as a human, let's not forget the damage he did to our democracy.

The so-called "Hastert rule" further emboldened extremist hardball and disincentivized cross-party collaboration.
Dennis Hastert, the disgraced former speaker of the House who eventually went to prison for concealing hush money payments to children he molested, dies at age 84.

The seesaw between the ever-farther right & the centrist-liberal-progressive entente always sent in after to clean up the right's inevitable fuckups is intimately tied to the fact that people have not been offered this platform despite begging, repeatedly, for anyone to attempt it.
My never-ending mantra is the winning platform is anti-corruption, good governance, & expansion of participation in our democracy. Get the criminals out of govt & people's pockets & in prison; deliver real, appreciable change people can feel; & make people part of something greater than themselves.

The Constitution allows it. South Korea has proven it works. If you want to make impeachment viable—and so much else is pointless if you don't—then it can be done by a simple majority adopting a simple rules change: vote on the verdict by secret ballot.
A Democratic Senate Should Adopt Secret Impeachment Ballots on a Priority Basis
Such a change, requiring no constitutional amendment, would free senators to vote their judgment instead of their fears

I think the problem is that for whatever reason, society/the media/whoever have correctly determined we need a way to reintegrate millions of people into society and from that incorrectly determined the way to do so is for the people who were wronged to apologize to the people who wronged them.
The press is so invested in a “these aren’t bad, racist people, they were hoodwinked!” whitewash of the Trump years.

At some point the sheer degree and frequency to which these people can be demonstrably found to be lying about themselves—“I was a lifelong Democrat til da factree closed down yadda yadda”—has to be taken as evidence that the hypothesis about The Workers just being misled rubes is disastrously wrong
Working class Republican found lying about his motivations and history next to fork in kitchen
So, this very sympathetic piece where the subject is “a lifelong Democrat who had voted for Trump for the first time in 2024”.

5 minutes of checking his facebook shows pro Trump posts as far back as 2019, and a post saying that he “stands with Trump” posted just a couple of days after Trumps coup.

I stand by what I wrote early this year: Trump and Co. will definitely try to steal the midterms. And they will fail, because it's too big.

Trying to buy votes wasn't part of their scheme then. But you should see it as a sign of desperation — that they know their other malfeasance won't be enough.

A hallmark of democratic backsliding is government leaders stealing from taxpayers and using public funds to try to get themselves electoral advantages.

Backsliding countries keep the form of elections, but corrupt leaders render them no longer free and fair by putting a state thumb on the scale.
The amount of money the administration is promising in order to buy votes is significantly less than the amount of money it is taking away in programs and services. And it's OUR money!
The US Energy Department will announce $150 million in new funding for power lines in Alaska on Monday as Vice President JD Vance visits the state, where Republicans are fighting to hold a critical Senate seat in the November midterm elections.

tl;dr warriors fight for their own honor and to preserve a way of life in which they are at the top of the social hierarchy. Soldiers fight to defend the constitution of the United States.

If you don't understand the difference you don't belong in power.

there is no leftist literature as embarrassing as the "anticorruption is bourgeois and you have to understand that the politics of the working class are inherently patrimonial" literature which followed Lavo Jato and PT's total failure to do literally anything to reform.
the thing about Lula is that the objections to the investigation of him and his party were all procedural or political and none of them were substantive. he has a reputation as dirty, and he is, in fact, dirty.

This is why every boomer-ass “don’t pay them until they make a deal” proposal pisses me off so much. Like yeah, cool, make it *even more* so that only the independently wealthy can afford to be in congress. Excellent idea.
Less than 1% of major party nominees for Congress are working class. It is one of the most fundamental ways that Congress is not representative. And their views, e.g. on unregulated gambling websites, are apt to be different.
