Europe cannot afford to treat its values as expendable. Each concession to the far right corrodes democracy at home and erodes its credibility abroad. By reducing principles to luxuries, Europe risks losing not just its dignity but political agency.

Finally read the new AfD strategy paper on Europe. It casts 2029 as a “historic window” to reorient the EU’s foundations through Treaty change, with a right-wing majority in the EP and a German government with AfD participation both within reach.

Thread on some notable points:

Rejecting the IAA because of opt-in/opt-out would be throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Trade relations are, obviously, important. But the IAA can be implemented in a way that it doesn't harm them.
And the threat of exclusion to EU market can even open some export markets for the EU.
💣 EPP heavyweights drop a bombshell by demanding the cancellation of the IAA, which introduces European preference in subsidies and public procurement for specific sectors.

New paper out on the Industrial Accelerator Act - Nils has the key take-aways in the thread below.

The mechanism in the IAA has potential - but with its proposed operationalisation, the IAA risks becoming a paper tiger: new administrative burdens, limited economic effect.
How to fix that? See 👇
This summer, the EU plans to finally get serious about Chinese industrial policy.

The Buy European rules in the Industrial Accelerator Act could be a key part of the answer.

The catch: in their current form, they may do more harm than good.

@ph-jaeg.bsky.social and I have some ideas to fix them.

As EU leaders gather at the European Council tomorrow to discuss mounting Chinese import pressure, a consensus is emerging that industrial overcapacity poses a systemic threat to Europe’s manufacturing base. Far less settled is what the EU should do about it.

For years, Europe assumed foreign investment would naturally generate industrial upgrading. The Industrial Accelerator Act marks a shift.

@aleichthammer.bsky.social & I argue its FDI conditionality targets a real issue, but is currently too weak to solve it 🧵
