Proposal for game devs: Users starting up "is this game dead" discourse should be cause for an immediate ban from discord servers, forums, etc. It provides no value and just alienates players. It's just pure toxicity.

I always wonder what kind of complete loser one has to be to spend time that could be use playing games going into game developer Discord servers and game forums just to post concurrent user numbers, which seems to be the new form of "is this game dead?"

You’ve gotta use AI because it’s the future. But also it’ll take your job. But also it’ll create a paradise on earth and solve most of our problems. But also it’ll end humanity soon. But also you’ll get left behind if you don’t use it right now.

The Democratic Party really need to figure out how to make its fundraising less terrible. I shouldn't be getting 4 texts in 3 days about 3 different candidates that are all "My Decision" or "A Tough Decision". You really need more fucking variety in your playbook.

New typo/terminology for when someone tries to use genAI on production code: "maintainted"

Mostly that really big word is "fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck".

I didn't really need to get up to the front bumper of my car laying on the ground in front of it. No idea what happened overnight, but I assume it was the fucking raccoons around here pissed off that the compost bin is empty so they can't keep dumping it on the ground.

I wrote a quick alien name generator for a project. My description for the named it creates is "vaguely pronounceable words". Yesterday while naming something, it came up with "toganomicon"

Google: even though you have automatic AI note taking in meetings turned off, we're adding a new "feature" and turning that on by default.

Hey, guys, when the librarians get pissed about the destruction of books, it’s time to put those listening ears on.

Because we are very comfortable with the idea that books are tools that can be retired. What’s happening right now is not that.

TFW a client's Slack has descended into half "here's what <AI> said" instead of actual discussion.

A certain AAA studio told employees that their internal gen AI was trained only on local data, but whenever said employees tried to generate an image of a woman holding a gun, it generated Lara Croft.
The studio was not Crystal Dynamics, and had never worked on the Tomb Raider IP in any capacity.
I just want to mention:

Even if your AI somehow runs locally and you think it's okay, it's still using trained data from a pre-existing dataset which is still full of stolen work.

The sheer amount of data gen AI needs is in the hundreds of thousands, you can only get that by scraping
The gen AIs that most are familiar with were built using stolen creative work, but there are plenty of more niche gen AIs that do not use stolen work.

In yet another instance of AI being ABSOLUTE FUCKING GARBAGE YOU SHOULD NEVER USE, I wrote up nice instructions in a ticket with code blocks for instructions, and someone else had AI reformat it, which deleted some instructions entirely and removed all the formatting changing code blocks to bullets.

Today's game dev tips: localization.

1. Build your localization support early. It's MUCH more difficult to wedge it in later. Even if you aren't having your game translated yet, make a fake language you can use to test.

2. Don't build text through concatenation. Use substitution instead.

In the time of people claiming "I made" after using genAI, I'm reminded of this Indira Gandhi quote:

“My grandfather once told me that there were two kinds of people; those who do the work and those who take the credit. He told me to try to be in the first group; there was much less competition.”

Consistently with this team that is using AI for everything: there's a typo in a filename, so AI updates the documentation that had the correct spelling to refer to the incorrectly-spelled file instead of, you know, renaming the file like a sane person would do.

Ethical software design/development principle: nobody should ever have to opt out.

Now having other programmers just use fucking AI to reply to my comments on their pull requests and not actually fix the problems. I hate this fucking timeline so fucking much.

If you tool for entering text starts popping up AI "suggestions" every other word, I will absolutely stop fucking using it.

JIRA and Confluence are such fucking trainwrecks of enshittification now, and are anti-productivity tools.
