I stopped posting music + art photos & their stories to my (20 year old) website / blog back in 2021.

I stopped sharing photos & their stories on here (BS / ES) many, many months ago.

I’ve now stopped sharing photos via text & email.

Guess you can see where this is going now, if not before.

Today, "The Social Reckoning" hits theaters. @jasonkoebler.bsky.social sat down with Frances Haugen, one of the real-life whistleblowers the movie based on about why she exposed how Facebook’s algorithm was pushing people toward hate groups.

A fascinating editorial decision from the BBC, to make the headline a scaremongering “AUTISM AND ADHD ARE BEING OVERDIAGNOSED”, and then, four bullet points later, have the author of the report quoted as essentially saying “nah, that’s bullshit, actually”.

in case anyone wonders how they fake the appearance of a mind — by faking the sensation of conversation — i wrote a whole thread about it

tl;dr NONE of that is in the actual model, 100% of it is in the software between you and the model. it’s the curtain that hides the fake wizard
llms only “exist” to give one reply at a turn

you: x
llm: y

then the whole process starts over. there is no continuity. each reply is 100% fresh. the context of your previous “conversation” is included, hidden from you, in every request you make. continuity is an illusion
Great explainer. I don't think LLMs are conscious but a few additional arguments for LLMs nearing AI consciousness here:

Sam Altman said people are just gonna have to die in order to implement AI. In the very same week, Anthropic claimed it’s a human rights violation to be mean to the computer. These people need to be held accountable. They think lines of code are a person with rights but living people are debris.
Over the past year, Anthropic has repeatedly flirted with the idea that its AI models could be conscious in some way. In February, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said on a podcast, “We don’t know if the models are conscious.”

Octopuses are very clever sensitive animals. Because of their solitary nature and fragile bodies, confining them in tanks to farm them would be cruel and lead to huge animal suffering. It is impossible to farm them whilst protecting their welfare. No humane slaughter methods exist for octopuses.

Absolutely Epic! Hundreds of thousands of rays off the coast of #florida. This is probably the most #amazing spectacle I've seen in #nature. Rays gather in large groups for mating & migration. The size of the groups fluctuates from year to year.
