Gonna put some #WesternGrid news out here this week.

First up an update on Xcel in Colorado.

10 projects, ~2.9GW of wind/solar/storage/gas.

All going live before EOY 2030.
Definitely worth keeping an eye on this technology and this company... Second major announcement this year.

This is a really big deal!

Fervo now has 1,064 MW under contract - most of which comes online by 2028. Google has an option for another 600 MW by 2030.

If the 1.1GW operates at an 85% CF this = 8 TWh of annual generation.

Total US geothermal generation was 16 TWh in 2025.

1) EIA data for June was published yesterday, so we have data for generation for first half of 2026.

Coal generation is declining across the US. This is particularly apparent in the Western US - where coal decline is accelerating in 2026.

Note: Data = Jan-Jun

Under-reported story. Solar is booming in Africa !
OUT TODAY: The take-off in African solar that official statistics can’t yet see

2026 is on track for +45% in solar installations, setting new records in 36 countries.

New methodology reveals 3/4 of growth is distributed solar, much of which is missing from official data..🧵

The @CaliforniaISO grid hit a yearly peak demand high last night at 6:00PM - 44,483 MW.

At this time the grid was exporting 2,650 MW. Crazy to see exports during peak demand!

This never could have happened before battery storage.

Nice Solar project in Fresno, California.
- no structural steel
- higher capacity per acre
- part of an overall 27 MW system

This is great news for the Western Grid... especially the Northwest.

Some notes on this project:
- Name = North Plains Interconnector
- 420 miles long
- 3,000 MW of bi-directional power
- construction starts in 2028
- expected to be operational in 2032

A bit of green...
Ireland is developing a duck curve.
Renewable generation and discharging storage equalled 34% of yesterday's electricity demand, with a peak of 54% at 11:45. Fossil fuel generation (mostly gas) equalled 48% of demand. 0% of generation was exported, 18% of demand was met by imports.

Good news on the home Battery Energy storage front. Keep an eye on this story.

Key points in this article:
- 23,000 batteries installed
- 550 MWh instaled
- 100 installations/day (expects to double by year-end)
- new models have 39.2 Kwh of storage - wow!

1) It's hot in California. Today's peak demand on @caiso.com grid is expected to be near 44,922 MW.

Last year's peak was 44,506 MW on Aug, 21st.

Great to see CA steadily adding battery storage and lowering demand for post-solar natural gas in evenings.
On a very warm night in California, @caiso.com set a new record for battery discharge at 13,096 MW.

Sat - Aug 2nd.

In the past, this demand would have been split between imports and natural gas.

It does seem as if California now has a pretty good base in place and is ready to squeeze more fossil fuel out of its mix as well as that of the Western grid.

#energysky
The California grid - @caiso.com seems to be really dialed in lately.
- More solar growth
- Sun Zia wind from NM
- continued expansion of batteries
are combining to produce record-low natural gas generation.

The 12.5 GWh of generation was a record low for a day and the 2.5% was a record low share.

The minimum Net Load on @caiso.com reached -7.87 GW yesterday. Crazy !

I never thought something like this was possible. But with batteries continuing to be added over time, do we eventually have Net Load > Load. Seems likely.

New peak wind generation records are occurring almost daily for @caiso.com. Before this trend started, the previous record was from 2022 - what gives?

My guess: this wind is the beginning of the massive wind imports CA will be receiving from the SunZia project in NM.
