Incredible weekend in Chicago (& Milwaukee) at the Midwest Crossword Tournament (#midwestgridfest). Got to solve on the stage in the pairs finals w/ Rich. Due to an error by one pair and a split second finish ahead of another, we finished first! And Brewers are 2-0 vs. the Padres.

My favorite scene in Nolan’s Odyssey is at the end when Odysseus and Penelope set sail from the Grey Havens to the Undying Lands.

From Bette Davis’s first husband’s Complaint for Divorce (11/22/38):

“Defendant has insisted on occupying herself with reading to a totally unnecessary degree.”

Anyone in NYC should definitely try to grab a seat for this—listened on the Met broadcast today and it’s fantastic!

On a Bette Davis fixation at the moment: In 2002, Steven Spielberg anonymously bought the Oscar Davis had won at auction at Sotheby's and returned it to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The statuette had been part of the memorabilia displayed by the Planet Hollywood restaurant chain.

Nothing hits quite like TCM on a Saturday afternoon when you're sick. High on melodrama, but Bette Davis absolutely shines in DARK VICTORY (dir. Edmund Goulding, 1939)!
