Hey I'm teaching a course "AI, Creativity & Slop" to first-year students this fall which includes readings in lit/philosophy, history + cog sci/comp sci. Does anyone have recs - essays they love in any of these areas - to help me finalize the syllabus? Would really appreciate any suggestions, thx!

What to the Colored Conventions was the Declaration of Independence?

Normally we hear Frederick Douglass on the 4th of July. This year, we are trying something new.

From now until Monday night, we are posting quotes every half hour from the Colored Conventions movement.

Historian of Reconstruction here, I am so honored that Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson cited #theriseandfallofthesecondamericanrepublic in her brilliant concurrence on the Trump v Barbara birthright citizenship case. this should have been an unanimous 9-0 decision but thank God for small mercies!

Recently, FamilySearch digitized and uploaded tons of microfilmed records, including many from 18th-century Massachsuetts. They're using some sort of AI to transcribe/summarize the handwritten documents.

I've noticed that the AI strips out references to race and enslavement in 18thc documents.

I say it again and again: Because we don’t learn the real history of this country, we do not understand what this country is capable of. After 1870, 22 Black men served in Congress. By 1901, because of racist SCOTUS rulings, electoral coups and election cheating and violence, there were none.

While reading Toni Morrison's interviews in the 1970s and later, I am shocked by interviewers' racist descriptions and judgment of the author. But, I still see these "interviewers" who project their own voids onto women of color with intellectual power and courage. Of course, they are intimidated.

As soon as, for a DH project on Toni Morrison, I checked out big files and folders from the Lorain Public Library, I got in my car and turned on radio--NPR Fresh Air was interviewing Namwali Serpel about her book, "On Toni Morrison." She ended it with her reflection on the library!
