Someone call the orcas.
I’m on a small-ship Alaska cruise with my son; our boat rescued a stranded vessel last night and apparently we did that after the Coast Guard radioed Mark Zuckerberg’s yacht - which was closer - and they repeatedly refused to respond. (There was near unanimous booing when the captain announced this)

Emily is a genius; I am extremely, genuinely thrilled for her!

But also: as The Odyssey sells out books and theaters alike, Classics departments and language classes are being decimated across the US. If you want more Emily Wilsons we have to FUND SCHOLARSHIP and FUND TRANSLATION AND TRANSLATORS.
“A Penn professor thought she’d sell 1000 copies of her ‘Odyssey’ translation. She sold a million this year alone, thanks to Christopher Nolan.”

“West Philly's Emily Wilson, who penned a highly acclaimed translation of the epic poem in 2017, is having a big summer.”

A quick word on Taco Bell:

That's where we found the suspected lettuce, and it's not bc Taco Bell is gross.

It's bc Taco Bell is REALLY GOOD at tracing product!

Keeping track of exactly where they got their ingredients, & exactly what restaurants each shipment of ingredients went to!

“Canciones” is one of her best. But even after all the money Linda made for her label, they hated the idea of a Spanish-language album. “You owe me this,” she said.

“Canciones” was for years “the biggest-selling non-English language album in US history, going double platinum and earning a Grammy” ✨

Agree. We’ve been reporting lately on ICE ramping back up to 11, but the trump administration is trying to do it without Minnesota type headlines.

The secret police are trying to be more… secret
ICE is engaged in a very large escalation nationwide, with the agency claiming to be hitting record arrest numbers amid the return of quotas. This has gotten very little attention from the media because ICE learned lessons from the chaotic disasters of Kristi Noem’s tenure.

Keep a watch.
ICE is surging in the Seattle area. (Map shows activity in the last week)

Do you have your whistle with you?

this countrys fetish for punishing those we decide are unworthy of help at the expense of all of us is so completely bat shit
Water fountains disappeared from the Longleaf Trace in June as the board that governs it grew concerned about how homeless people were using its facilities.

Runners and bikers who use the 44-mile trail fear the decision could have dire consequences in Mississippi's summer heat.

Fuck the reflecting pool. This has not gotten nearly enough coverage or generated the proper outrage. People thrown in prison for 30-50 years for the "crime" ofmaking zines and belonging to a book club!!

This is straight-up totalitarian atrocity. Political prisoners thrown in a gulag to rot.
‘This is injustice’: how leftist zines were used to sentence anti-ICE protesters to decades in prison
Advocates sound alarm after zines were used as evidence to convict protesters of terrorism charges tied to 2025 protest at Texas ICE facility

BREAKING NEWS: Trump just refused to sign the housing bill that Congress passed.

He is single-handedly delaying the largest investment in 30 years. He could bring down costs for working people with the stroke of a pen... and instead he's throwing a temper tantrum.

I’m not a conspiracy theorist but come on. And the level of misinformation coming from a gathering of journalists who shouldn’t even there! It’s alarming and absurd. And the cherry on top is the footage of the catering staff, still doing their jobs while the people in evening wear stand around.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I do not believe most published authors are using AI in their work beyond things like grammar checks or research. Some do, sure. But I talk to published authors almost every day and very few of them use LLMs beyond that in their work. Why would they? thewalrus.ca/new-york-tim...
