“I believe in the immortality of the Theater, it is a most joyous place to hide, for all those who have secretly put their childhood in their pockets and run off and away with it, to play on to the end of their days.” ~ Max Reinhardt. His birthday.

STILL CRANKY
I am a little cranky to be sure, but I am tired of old men telling me about my field. I know a lot of them are in charge. Were in charge. Are for some reason thinking the world needs them to take 2 years to no longer be in charge.
Remember that night on Twitter when we all learned that Oskar's name is Paul?

I'm packing up to leave after a lovely weekend at the O'Neill Playwrights Conference. I haven't been back here in many years, but for a while I was here almost every summer. I was at the beach today where I came up with my Dramaturg as Lifeguard metaphor.

But it's no use, says he. Force, hatred, history, all that. That's not life for men and women, insult and hatred. And everybody knows that it's the very opposite of that that is really life. ~ James Joyce, Ulysses. Happy Bloomsday.

I've abandoned many essays over the last few years. About comedy and audiences and the scary state of theater, regional theater in particular. I care about New York in an abstract way, and I've been proud when shows I've worked on have made it there, because then, indeed, they can make it anywhere.
