A week ago, a famous liberal NYT columnist called me a pedant because I insisted that I am not an immigrant nor can be called an immigrant in the U.S. because I was born in Appalachian Kentucky.

I don’t care how tacky you find hillbillies, I’m still a native born citizen. *shrug*
Wanna see a cool little 🔥 ☁️? Meet the pileus. Latin for “cap” (think pileated woodpeckers), the
MASTER (MODIS/ASTER Airborne Simulator) sensor on NASA's ER-2s, a type of high-flying research aircraft, captured this cloud over the Sand Creek Fire.

Fire Cloud With a Pileus on Top - NASA Science
Scientists captured rare observations of an ephemeral pileus cloud hovering over a smoke-infused cloud that rose above a wildfire in Montana.

Those are not hay stacks. Those triangular piles of dried corn stalks tied at the top are called foddershocks.
circa 1905: View of a person, possibly a teacher, wearing a ghost costume behind a lunch table with Halloween decorations in a rural schoolhouse. The display consists of a carved pumpkin, cutouts of witches and black cats, and haystacks. (Photo by Historic Photo Archive/Getty Images)

There are currently tropical storms/hurricanes names Nolo and Polo. Will we get to Rolo and YOLO? I certainly hope so(lo).

Current camera & emergency call-in’s by people report 🔥 within 15 mins or less in & near human-dominated landscapes (which the organizers of this XPRIZE admitted).

Real talk: Why invest hundreds of millions of dollars to decrease that by 5 mins? (Though in this case, no competitor succeeded).
Although no team walked away with either of the two grand prizes, the technology showcased could prove helpful as the world grapples with the growing costs of worsening wildfire disasters.
XPRIZE Wildfire winners spotted fires within 10 min—but couldn’t stop them
$11M competition showed wildfire detection is still easier than stopping fires.

With CEQA lawsuits curtailed, some cities are expanding fire hazard zones to exempt land from housing laws - San Diego covers 5 times more area than state fire officials recommend.

Ironically, blocking safer apartments pushes more building into riskier wildland edges.

Today’s Fall Equinox at 8:05 pm ET marks the start of astronomical fall in the N. Hemisphere and is when the Sun is directly over Earth’s equator. Now through the Winter Solstice, the Northern Hemisphere will receive less ad less direct sunlight as Earth continues along its tilted orbit.

Wendell Berry writings hit different when you are from Kentucky.

At times his work has been incorrectly affiliated with Appalachia, but much of what he struggled with is cultural inheritance of the Old South.

He was from and lived in the Louisville metro, the largest urban region.

I suggest that we don’t start renaming places and landforms in North America with Indigenous-derived names, as more than half the states in the 🇺🇸 would be SOL.

Heartbreaking 💔.

A real one. Actually cared & took care of people who society forget. Read a book to child, donate to your library or adult literacy program, give cash to a food bank, & remember talent springs from all places & socioeconomic origins. Sometimes in stage makeup w/ large bosoms.
