The future of Europe’s forest disturbance regimes– a thread.

Tl, dr: Disturbances from wildfire, bark beetles & wind will continue to increase in the coming decades. Under unabated climate change disturbances could more than double by 2100.

Great work led by @mariapotterf.bsky.social, with a huge group effort under the hood to sample forest regeneration across 10 countries… happy to have been part of it 🤩

Short message: forests are beautifully regenerating, but the regeneration is maladapted to climate change 🫠

I'm still looking back to this amazing field work campaign back in 2023! Sites full of brambles, beautiful landscapes and amazing food were waiting for me in France 🥐
Great team effort led by @mariapotterf.bsky.social now out in GCB 🥳
Central Europe has seen unprecedented forest disturbances recently, but how are forests recovering? We surveyed disturbance hotspots in 10 countries 3-5 years after disturbance, finding ample tree regeneration and no signs of forest loss (median 4750 stems/ha), but... 1/2 doi.org/10.1111/gcb....

"Closer-to-nature" forest management has been proposed as a way to reconcile biodiversity and ecosystem services, especially under a changing climate. But can it work? And how strong is the evidence?
In this paper, we synthesized knowledge from Central Europe:

Gentle reminder to fill in the survey on forest disturbance change (below). We have *a lot* of great responses already (thank you!) covering all continents and biomes, but the survey will be open for a few more days! Thanks for making the time, your disturbance expertise is highly appreciated!
Calling on all forest disturbance experts: Please consider contributing to our study on global forest disturbance change, and help resolve the nuances of changing forest disturbance regimes. More details and survey here: www.lss.ls.tum.de/edfm/disturb...

We’re launching a global survey to capture expert insights on forest disturbance change. Please consider participating and share widely with colleagues working in the field — especially those whose forests are often underrepresented in global assessments

How expensive are natural disturbances for Europes forestry?

I'm super excited, that @natclimate.nature.com decided to publish a Research Briefing by @rupertseidl.bsky.social and me related to our recent paper on the cost of disturbances. Check it out here:

www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Climate change raises costs for European forestry - Nature Climate Change
Natural disturbances, such as windthrows, pest outbreaks and wildfires, pose a major economic threat for the forestry sector. By coupling spatially explicit ecological and economic forest models, this study assesses the costs of natural disturbances under current and future climate conditions for all of Europe.

What is the cost of wildfire, windthrow and bark beetles for Europe’s forestry? We estimate that disturbances reduce Europe’s forest value by €115 bn, more than doubling to €247 bn under severe climate change. Led by @johannesmohr.bsky.social, out in @natclimate.nature.com doi.org/10.1038/s415...

How expensive are 🪲💨🔥?! I can‘t believe it, but my 2nd PhD paper is finally published @natclimate.nature.com! Disturbances lower the economic value of Europes 🌲 by 29%... Climate change will increase it to up to 42%! (Now imagine a company looses 42% of its value…) doi.org/10.1038/s41558-025-02408-9
