We went to Ottawa for a visa. Naturally, I found Hitler’s car instead.

A visit to the Canadian War Museum led to Hitler’s armoured Mercedes, Göring’s uniform and the curious story of how the Mercedes was finally identified.

Plus a regrettable decision to walk there.

Quite a good travel day.
The Führer’s Mercedes, and Other Unexpected Things I Found in Ottawa
A residency visa, bagpipes and a long walk to a museum I had somewhat written off.

A ruined dinner, a hasty exit, and one very consequential train ride back to London — how a young historian talked Clementine Churchill out of burning fifty-six years of her husband's letters. New post ↓

A home fit for a king. Each summer, when the Royals went north, Clarence House discreetly opened its doors — a rare opportunity. Surrounded by silver frames filled with his family photographs, felt like being admitted to something very few people will ever see.

Spent a day inside the Houses of Parliament, and came away with three things: a story about the length of a sword, an encounter with a Cabinet Minister, and a Lord with an amusing nickname his daughters almost certainly didn't intend as a compliment. #britishparliament

Commonwealth Day at NSW Parliament House. Bagpipes, brilliant company, and the honour of representing the English-Speaking Union Australia — Gov Beesley, Commander Vallar, superb tablemates, and the lads from Scots College doing what they do best on the pipes. 🎶 God Save the King. #commonwealthday

A few nights ago, I stayed at Villa Rothschild in Königstein, just outside Frankfurt.

Built in the 1890s by Wilhelm Carl von Rothschild as a summer residence.

In 1948–49, the Parliamentary Council met here to draft the Grundgesetz — the Basic Law that founded the Federal Republic of Germany.

Visited Huis Doorn outside Utrecht in the Netherlands — the final home of Kaiser Wilhelm II.

After Germany’s defeat in 1918, the Kaiser went into exile at the insistence of Woodrow Wilson—as a condition for ending The Great War. He brought with him 64 train carloads of possessions.

I learned details yesterday about the persecution of the Jews in Holland while I was visiting the Dutch National Holocaust Museum. It is located next to a kindergarten, which was used as a deportation site for children.

I’m numb. Speechless.

This is not just another political crisis—we are entering something far worse: a usurpation of power, the unravelling of democracy in real-time. I never thought I’d see this happen, and yet here we are.
