My wife’s 2011 MacBook lives again. At first we suspected a faulty ssd controller. Turns out it was the SATA cable yet again. This is the third one it’s had. She has had this laptop since new and loves it. So far, 2 new keyboards and back lights, 3 batteries, new speakers, 1 hdd and 2 SSD. It’s love

I realise that with the exception of music (which uses my own local library and music collection) and photos, I really don’t need anything else that is Mac OS specific. Maybe time to install Linux/bad on my 2019 iMac and be free of the upgrade cycle. This machine is more than enough for me.

This essay hit me square between the eyes. I’ve been feeling this sense of needing to simplify my life for so long. I already switched back to my Casio so it felt extra directed at me. Even technically I’m moving back to the KISS methodology in everything. www.terrygodier.com/... #simplicity

Ok. I’ve removed cloudflare from my sites. Something felt off about putting both a third party company & a black box between my site and users. Litespeed is actually doing a fine job, and with modsecurity and a few well designed .htaccess rules, it’s actually under lighter load.

Ok. I’m actually off all socials with the exception of mastodon. All apps removed. Only Openvibe for mastodon and a few bluesky users. I just can’t anymore. It’s all such a waste of time and I’m exhausted with the sales pitch’s and constant influencer nonsense. Fediverse is the last hope.

This Is For Everyone is now available in paperback.

You might recognise the face on the cover...a younger me at MIT in 1998 when 150 million people used the web. Today it's roughly 6 billion.

I can’t help but feel a bit wasteful. Had a smart meter fitted years ago, and was on agile octopus tariff for years. Lately, my readings stopped updating and apparently it’s an issue between these old meters and the phone mast. Specifically the 2G/3G switch off. New meter needed.

Even though I was ill, I was back home in Manchester over the weekend to watch AFI tear it up. Been listening since I was a kid and first saw them 25 years ago in the same city. Did not disappoint.

There is so much AI boosterism and bro culture going on right now - but holy shit. If you are knowledgable about something and you ask for its help, it’s makes up some amount of crap. Fine for code help, mostly untrustworthy for anything else.

This one hurts. After an amazing career, followed by years and years of adversity. I’m so glad Tim got back on stage of late to tell his story.

I've been ill for over a week, which was the entire time I was away on a trip in Manchester and the few days I've been home. I managed to power through & get most things done, but it has sucked, and I definitely had bigger plans. This has cheered me up

Why I must use cloudflare now? I have a simple rule that fires if outside my target countries, or if the URL is a database query hog such as search and add to cart which can’t be cached. Last 24 hours, cloudflare challenged 724k from ips all over the globe using Chrome/145 UA….

*Removes instagram from iPhone. Saves countless hours a day and battery still at 95% by 10am after being awake since 7am.

I only have Openvibe on my phone now for unified mastodon/bluesky feeds as both are free of the influencers. Try it. Save time, headspace and battery life

I’m done trying to chase spammers, scrapers, ai crawlers and bad bots. I’ve added cloudflare back onto my site, using tiered cache. Those in the UK & verified bots have free access. This is 99% of our audience. Rest of world it’s a managed challenge that will auto pass for most

Just a quick heads up, I might still post on social media over the summer (I use Fedica to post/schedule), but I’m physically taking the time away from socials for the rest of summer. I won’t be replying or scrolling. All apps removed. Contact me directly if you need me.

Just spent a week with my niece who turned 18 last month. She came to stay with us. After seeing how much young people are addicted to their phones & completely disconnected from the world around them, I’ve removed all socials from my phone. Broadcasting via Fedica. Disconnecting

Absolute #retrogaming score! This seems to have been pulled from the Microsoft store, so I nabbed a physical copy for £12. Another reason digital and licensing sucks. I went to play the digital version and it’s gone. The license for my physical copy can’t be revoked.

Weirdest thing of the algorithm era is people trying to grow on these platforms and every post is like do you remember when…..? Do you like……? Who do you…..? - everyone asking pointless questions constantly to farm engagement. It’s so strange. Be a human.

I installed the latest version of instagram on my phone after months not using it. I saw Moseri say we can now tune our algorithm. What a dumpster fire. I’m in my early 40s, married but not a parent. It shows me OF girls, get rich quick, strong porn and retro gaming. Disastrous.

So I ended up removing cloudflare. The purist in me hates over complicating a website or server, and I also don’t like ceding control to a third party. It’s just another point of failure. Surprisingly, our site is faster and less stressed without CF. 264ms for a full dynamic page

It’s been years since I was in San Francisco for the 2013 #WWDC - I always love these launches, but those OG days were so much fun. Grainy photos shot in iPhone 4 in period.

I can’t beleive that Ministry - Last Tangle In Paris was recorded in 2012. Still one of my favourite live albums from the genre defining and often genre defying Ministry. The soundtrack to my Saturday. Uncle Al and his genius audio samples. #metal #industrial
