Just because it’s my birthday, forgive me, but I’d be honored if you might check out anything I’ve written. Here’s a place to find just some of it. If you hate it, leave a comment! That helps too, strangely enough. I prefer to think you’ll love it, though. dailygrindhouse.com/31-flavors-h...

Every year around this time, I write about scary movies in a column I call, for lack of a better title, 31 FLAVORS OF HORROR! This space is where I will share all of those columns to date. I will add ...

THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE was released in Austin, TX on October 1st in 1974. It’s one of the great American films, in any genre. Here’s my tribute: goo.gl/6wrbjp 🪚
[31 FLAVORS OF HORROR] THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (1974) - Daily Grindhouse
THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE was a movie of its time, and it reflected that as surely as any other more prestigious and acclaimed American classic.  It’s a genuinely important American film. Movies of the era such as THE GODFATHER, TAXI DRIVER, ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST, and A CLOCKWORK ORANGE are justly heralded, but THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE is equally important as a historical document of the 1970s. The movie arrived in 1974.  This was the era of the Vietnam War.  The war was still going on when the movie was being made.  What director Tobe Hooper and his collaborators did, consciously or otherwise, was to capture the anger of the era.  Obviously there are no politics directly addressed by the story, which is at its core, like PSYCHO before it and THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS after it, a hyper-fictionalized elaboration of the Ed Gein story.  The political furor of the era is not to be found in the main text, but instead, it roils underneath, embedded within the ferocious,...

Released in 1968 in Pittsburgh on this date in horror history... NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, directed by George A. Romero, and starring the legendary Duane Jones! An essential horror film. Maybe even THE essential horror film. Words: bit.ly/1jOYxWg 🧟‍♂️🧟‍♀️🧟

I jumped at the opportunity to see BLACK ZOMBIE tonight. Essential and profound. The first three Romero zombie movies are as necessary to me as air, but this made me reconsider them and the whole damn genre. More importantly, it educated me about Haiti and its history; both horrific and triumphant.

Happy birthday to my one & only niece, the apple of my eye, my sweetpea. So constantly amazed by the special person you are. Hope your every day is filled with goodness and joy, and when the tougher moments come, know that a grumpy but very proud uncle is just a call away. 🥳

I don’t love rating movies, but I try. It’s just that lots of times I like something more after it lives in my head for a little while. Occasionally less, but that’s rarer. Only thing I know is, any movie with Keith David in it automatically goes up a star. #letterboxd

Love to Michael Berryman & family. ❤️
Please keep Michael Berryman and his family in your thoughts.

On his way home from a convention, his house caught fire.

Michael and his wife, Patty lost everything.

We're working with his agent on this GoFundMe to lessen the burden Michael and Patty now face.

Grateful. Life gets lonely sometimes, especially with the brain I got. I have been surprised and moved by how many people reached out to wish me a happy #birthday. I am trying to reply to everyone. Thank you. Thank you. (Spent the evening in my happy place, with these two.)

Yup, it’s my birthday. I was born at 12:16pm. My wish is that people be kinder to each other, particularly to those in positions of less power, and most especially to #animals. My gift every year is my niece, whose #birthday is just two days after mine. Thank you. I love you. ❤️

My sister and I went to see COYOTE VS. ACME this evening. So much fun! My sister was laughing constantly. Nobody told me ahead of time who was playing the judge! That reveal made me about as happy as any movie moment has all year. Also, obviously, the end credits tune. 🧨 #CoyoteVsAcme

Twenty Septembers Later.
Today is September 11th, 2021, twenty years on from that day in New York. I wasn’t in New York on that day, and the not-being-there, I think, had its own effects on the trajectory I took. This isn’…

Ralphie wanted me to thank everyone who wished him a happy #birthday. He spent the morning eating #pancakes and getting belly-rubs from his uncle. Ralphie wants you all to know that he loves you, unless you are a motorcycle. ❤️🐶 #dogs

Happy 8th birthday Ralphie. Not sure how it happened that we pretty much have the same personality. My sister says it’s because we’re Virgos. I think maybe it’s because I trained you. However you became you, I love you, for being goofy, cranky, sweet, funny, for being my buddy.

I picked up this sketchbook today. After looking at so much amazing artwork yesterday, I am inspired, at last, to pick up a pencil again. (Understatement: I am not remotely in the same league as Gene Colan. Or Miyazaki. Not in the same universe!)

Happy birthday to Gene Colan, who would have been 100 years old today. Artist on my favorite comic of all time, TOMB OF DRACULA, where he cocreated Blade. He also cocreated another favorite of mine, the Falcon. Also (obviously) one of the best Batman artists ever. www.tcj.com/gene-colan-1...

Saw #BUDDY tonight. Kind of just about the last place I was expecting visual references to THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER, but I’m cool with that, obviously. 🦄

my copy of Tomb Of Dracula #5! yup, it’s all mine now, thanks to my friends at Sucker Punch Comics ❤️
