I have started drawing for the amazing script by @patrickspaet.bsky.social . It's a vampire tale dealing with the true horrors of chronic pain, gaslighting doctors, lost dreams amidst delicious queer love, buff female skaters, years old vampires and Berlin nights. So excited for the new adventure!
A detail from a page on a lighttable, a pencil lies on the paper. The detail shows a comic panel in which a female vampire in highrise jeans, cowboy boots and sophia loren hair flies through the air attacking a vampire with paul weller hair, trench coat and beatle boots. They are in a cellar with persian carpets and a coffin. The latter things are still uninked and only vaguely visible.

Curly trees I drew a few days ago, while I was in the countryside.
A page of a finished drawing in a sketchbook. In the foreground colorful rooftops and bushes. Behind them, against a hillside with dry grass, multiple trees stand with wavy and curly branches with tufts of green. A page of an unfinished drawing in a sketchbook. The sketchbook is held up, in the background is a riverbed with lillies. A page of an unfinished drawing in a sketchbook. All in black and white lines, the foreground rooftops and bushes. I draw very little and quite slowly in my sketchbooks. This is from a small travel book I draw mostly trees in during summer time. This is a tree near my house in Berlin. I drew it summer 2024.
A page in a sketchbook showing a tree. The top part has bushy light green leaves. The entire trunk is covered in darker green ivy leaves. The shadows are done in purple which is not the natural color. At the base of the tree low metal fenceposts stick out among the ivy.

Hello, here is a flyer with my current and upcoming presentations of my new book Baumschatten.
#EditionModerne
In the middle is a drawing of myself sitting in a cantilever chair, reading with a microphone from a laptop on my lap. From my mouth comes, instead of a speechbubble, a whirling treetrunk, ending in small bushy canopies. Surrounding the drawing is the following text: Current and upcoming events 2026: May 2-June 13, Baumschatten Exhibition in Berlin Bookshop Die Gute Seite (Satelite-exhibition of the festival Comic Invasion Berlin) May 31, 2 pm, Baumschatten Reading and exhibition at the Linke Buchtage Berlin June 6, 1-2pm, Comic Salon Erlangen: Lesung von Joris Bas Backer und Gespräch mit Markus Pfalzgraf June 7, 11am-1pm, Comic Salon Erlangen: Edition Moderne präsentiert: Der Lesemarathon June 18, 6:30-8pm, Baumschatten Reading Kultursommer am Mehringplatz, Berlin

I'm showing bits and bobs from my new book Baumschatten during the @comicinvasion.bsky.social at the loveliest of bookstores called Die Gute Seite in Neukölln, near my studio. Opening May 2nd at 12!
#editionmoderne
In the exhibition at Die gute Seite bookstore, Joris Bas Backer presents images from his new graphic novel Baumschatten, published by Edition Moderne. From a minor neighborhood conflict – the pros and cons of preserving a so-called “Nazi oak” in a Berlin schoolyard – Bas Backer distills a social panorama and an entire network of personal and social relationships, opinions and tensions. https://www.jorisbasbacker.net/ Datum und Uhrzeit / Date and time: Vernissage / opening: 2. Mai 12:00 / 2 May 12:00  Ausstellung / Exhibition:  2. Mai - 4. Juli /  2 May to 4 July Veranstaltungsort / Venue: Buchhandlung Die gute Seite Richardplatz 16 12055 Berlin

Imagine being a punk or an activist and not using your local public library on the reg. How embarrassing for you.
Illustration with coloured pencils. Two people are sitting round a campfire at night in the dark telling spooky stories. The first person says "It's your turn to tell a scary story." The second person holds a torch under their face for spooky effect and says "Most people you know don't have library cards. But they love to tell you about mutual aid and community. And they fucking love free little libraries." The first person replies "Nooooooo!"

Preparing a little for an exhibition coming up in 3 weeks.
A photo of a few items strewn across a wooden floor. The items are a small poster advertising an exhibition, a frame with 2 comic pages in it, some tape, scissors, a cutter and in the corner of the photo a small pile of frames still in their packaging.
