I am tired of having to pretend that the value of studying my discipline solely rests on the "marketable skills" we teach. Sometimes things are just worth knowing and doing because they make your life bigger and richer.
I don't want to make civic arguments about history. I don't want to make instrumentalist arguments about history. I want engineers to understand my discipline is rigorous too and if not I want to be able to make fun of them forever because no historian ever built a bridge that broke in the wind.

reminder, if you present, in psychology say, findings that "wow a neural network simulated this task" it's not actually surprising (they are function approximators) nor is the surprise compatible with believing neural networks can learn any mapping (they cannot) — confused? see below

One of them, is that this is straight out of the tobacco & fossil fuel playbook. Have the same companies and billionaires fund "independent" institutes staffed by the same people, and "cite" their reports as "independent experts" showing "consensus."🧵

If you read here you see that according to the labour theory of value that's also impossible for AI to do all jobs and their owners to stay rich. How will they generate value without labour?

So yes, they want to do The Matrix basically.
FWIW he spoke on highly related topics.

> Marx demonstrated that mechanization never aimed to make human life easier or reduce the labor time necessary for social reproduction. Rather, mechanization served as the precondition for increasing labor productivity to the benefit of capital holders.

After the break we discussed AI in relation to scientific integrity, based on the paper Guest, O., Suarez, M., et al. (2026). Against the uncritical adoption of 'AI' technologies in academia. Digital Culture & Education, 16(2), 85-118. doi.org/10.5281/zeno...
Against the Uncritical Adoption of 'AI' Technologies in Academia
Artificial intelligence (AI) companies and their rhetoric infringe on academia in harmful ways, mirroring past uncritical acceptance of industry logics, such as those of tobacco and petroleum. In this position piece, we tease apart and explain why phrases like 'generative AI' impede scholarly discussion because by design these expressions are used to dazzle and sidestep scrutiny. Furthermore, we contend with the AI industry's logics to enable rejecting frames such as: that we must embrace the future, that this hype cycle is unique, that anthropomorphism and circular reasoning hold water when discussing AI systems, and that students are now all cheating or all need to use AI. To these ends, we expound on why universities must take their role seriously to a) counter the AI industry's marketing, hype, and harm; and to b) safeguard higher education, critical thinking, expertise, academic freedom, and scientific integrity. For each point we raise, we include pointers to relevant work to further inform and convince our colleagues.

I shouldn't feel dismayed, but it's been a year and we're still talking about words. If I have any power to change this, I'd just modestly hope to move to *why* they want us to obsess over these silly and very damaging words. But if we could move to substantial points even more it would be best. 1/2
As seen in the table & figure above, we dissect and explain how terminology is abused and contorted by industry — terms like 'generative' or 'agentic' are not able to isolate what is being critiqued. We have seen this countless times before; flitting from one nonsense buzzword to another. 2/n
