I guess I should give a brief introduction. I'm Josh and I've been working on the BBC's Design System team for over five years. My passion is CSS and I recently had the privilege of joining the CSSWG in the summer.

If you work on websites for ordinary web browsers, you are truly blessed.
Working at the BBC, I am always shocked by how bad the built-in web browsers are on smart TVs. They fork browsers and rip out lots of web platform features. Apparently one made Math.random() return the same number! 😂

Instead, once you go beyond the basic primitives, the platform is a minefield: the obvious thing to do is rarely accessible, and devs must jump through hoops to make it so.

Does anyone ever feel limited by the visible light spectrum? All we can use in our designs is various shades of red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue, purple, magenta and grey. We could really do with another one for our design system.

OK, I'm persuaded. For a toggle in the header or footer, a toggle between 'system colour scheme' ↔️ 'the opposite' is better than system ↔️ light ↔️ dark.

At the CSSWG there is an issue about 2D Mesh gradients. The consensus was that whatever we do, it should be PDF compatible.
With the help of Gemini I found my way to “Coons Patches” as the underlying mechanism.

In my talk for CSS Day, I had a slide of a comment from YT complaining about CSS overstepping its bounds now that we can do some logic-based styling directly in CSS.
Afterwards, @adactio.com came to see me to laugh about it a bit, because he was hearing the same thing when :hover was added to CSS.

Good feedback on how the large text on mobile will be a problem for languages with very long words, like German.

This might be my last year living in the UK. Next spring, I'm hoping to move to Japan and I plan to start looking for jobs soon.
