1/43 Ok folks, after much teasing and anticipation, I'm THRILLED to share our new paper in Annual Review of Clinical Psychology. Not gonna lie: I'm proud of this one, and I hope it makes an impact on the field (so please share!).

A thread 🧵👇
it's always leg day.

One of the things that I am most eternally grateful for about the Montessori schools that our children have always been in has been the persistent emphasis on creative writing
One of my personal opinions is that we need to be having students at all levels doing more creative writing. The last 20+ of writing instruction seems to have shifted towards more regimented genres of composition, but one outcome has been a detachment from writers encountering their own voice.

So, since starting BJJ a few years ago, I’ve trained really consistently with a Brown belt who is about to be promoted to Black in two months (he’s been training for 10+ years, and, in the gym lingo, I was his pet white belt, and now I’m the one of the blues he gets to regularly murder)

I'll be reviewing applications for a new student or two for UNC-CH's clinical psychology PhD program! Social anxiety, pain, intensive longitudinal data, all that fun stuff.

What prospective applicants get if they email me (so no need): docs.google.com/document/d/1...

Credit where credit is due: during the Biden administration I was practically apoplectic with the number of “I did that“ stickers on the gas pumps, blaming Biden for gas prices, and constantly muttering about how the president was not responsible for gas prices, and Trump proved me wrong

Boromir.

Fall to redemption in the last hours of his life.

And as great as his last words were in the films, his final words in the book were equally beautiful in a different way.

'I tried to take the Ring from Frodo,' he said. 'I am sorry. I have paid.'
Name your fav Lord of the Rings character.

The fact that this bollocks is for rejection sensitivity, one of the nonsense themes that is so popular in TikTok “psychology,” is absolutely consistent with my priors on the whole idea
I have encountered a truly bizarre coding scheme for a survey.

People are asked two 6pt scale items for each of 9 stems (concern & expectancy). The total score is calculated by *multiplying* these two together, then averaging those 9 multiplied terms together

I know that authors usually don’t pick headlines, but even then, this one is a bit bold for a piece that literally says “There are currently no scientifically valid biomarkers for any psychiatric condition, with the exception of certain proteins used to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease.”
There’s no blood test or brain scan that can diagnose depression, schizophrenia or other major mental illnesses.

But researchers are hard at work on finding those biological markers. The next edition of psychiatry’s diagnostic manual will start to bring more biology into how we understand
I’m part of the team writing the next bible of psychiatry – for the first time, the DSM will use biology to understand mental disorders
Despite advances in neuroscience, the underlying biology of mental illness has remained elusive. The DSM-6 will attempt to integrate neurobiology into how clinicians diagnose and treat psychiatric conditions.

I was only recently exposed to the Union’s parody of the Confederate song Dixie

It’s savage

“Away down South in the land of traitors
Rattlesnakes and alligators

Where cotton's king and men are chattels
Union boys will win the battles”

First heavy day since this twinge; kept the deadlifts below 350 for two weeks and the squats around 315…

415 moved well today so I’m optimistic the recovery phase is winding down

This has turned into a full two days of conversation

Batman, ALL of the x-men *except* magneto, and every avenger except the Hulk absolutely fail and take the ring
Name a non-LOTR character who could resist the one ring.

Bad: garage door opener stopped working today
Good: I figured out why
Bad: it’s the master logic board
Good: I can buy just the part I need
Bad: the opener is 20 years old and a replacement logic board is more expensive than a whole new opener
Good: I know how to replace the whole opener

Same but for straight bourbon, a natural disinfectant
Yes, eating raw cookie dough is risky. But if I drink piping hot tea at the same time, it will cook the cookie dough in my stomach.
