Mom to the #flyingdog and #LesserSpottedSid. I'd love to reinvent myself, but I love beach sunrises and rugby too much to change. Catch me in a tree somewhere, or getting my hands dirty. Bridging divides between people and nature, making change happen.

It is that time of year when the water is warmer than the air outside. A welcome invitation.

Sitting under the stars listening to the sound of a Hyena whooping in the distance. An owl hooting nearby. The quiet hum of an aircon somewhere. The problems of the world seem very far away.

A surfer waits for the next set in the dawn light. Air thick with salty humidity, water warm and clear. An invitation to a gentle morning swim.

New in PN: The bombing of Iranian children is an unforgivable crime

"American disinterest in the lives of people abroad is a resource politicians use to justify cynical wars. It's hard to see on what moral grounds we claim a right to decide the fate of those about whom we clearly care so little."

Think of how bad things must be for a Supreme Court Justice to feel he has to explain why it's a good idea to have laws enacted by legislators instead of decreed by wannabe dictators

A reminder to the news media: “conflicting accounts” is what you say BEFORE the incontrovertible video evidence appears. After that, your job is to ask why one side is lying, not to repeat the lie and pretend no one knows the truth.

So after that mushy post, here is the evolution of todays sunrise. Because light is joy. And each day brings another chance to show the ones you love that you love them. #beachsunrise

A short story. My mom has had a number of health issues in the last 3 years and is really struggling to eat right now. We have been trying different things. She has always been an amazing cook. Incredible. Can make rice and gravy taste like a gourmet treat. 1/3

Air thick with sticky saltiness. Sea rumbling, churning, rushing to the shore. Cool water taking the edge off the humid air. Settling the soul.

The reactionary centrist logic is simple: if the left does something bad it’s the left’s fault, and if the right does something bad, it’s also the left’s fault for making them do it. It’s a simple formula and once you see it every one of their arguments is the same

Person at the airport blasting hooting and yelling reels from his phone. People around looking uncomfortable, but saying nothing. I offered him my spare set of headphones. Immediately he turned the volume down. Maybe a bit passive aggressive, but I don't have the patience for that before a flight.

I will never forget having to edit Jamal’s final, posthumous piece for the Washington Post, after he was murdered.

He was calling for free expression in the Arab world. You can read it here :

Opinion | Jamal Khashoggi: What the Arab world needs most is free expression
The Arab world needs a modern version of the old transnational media so citizens can be informed about global events.

Walmart, McDonalds and Amazon are the largest employers of people who require SNAP assistance.

The CEOs earned between 18-40 million last year, 1000x their median employee income.

They took billions in profits, while their workers relied on SNAP to survive.

Wanna fix fraud and abuse?

Fix that.
