I know it’s been a while sense I posted new art, haven’t been made in Sumi-e in a while. Life’s Tenacity has grown tremendously, and wildlife photography has been a growing passion of mine. A recent photo of a millipede inspired this piece. #Sumie #Japanese #Art #Ink #Traditional

Life consumes life. Fall webworms have turned this black cherry into an all-you-can-eat buffet, stripping leaves down to lace. But nature balances the books one hardworking paper wasp momma is out collecting caterpillars to feed her babies. Circle of life, Southern style. #photography #nature #macro

Small painting inspired by a photograph shared by The Kimono Gallery of the maiko Tanewaka performing A Brilliant Brocade of Chrysanthemums. The color palette arrived unexpectedly through a separate fascination with the Spiny Flower Mantis, part blossom and apparition. #Sumi-e #Japan #Geisha #Art

Exploring Magnolia Gardens in South Carolina, we stumbled onto a grassy patch full of rabbits near the old plantation house. Surprisingly, they let us get incredibly close—strange for animals usually so alert and cautious. #Photography #Wildlife #Conservation #SouthCarolina #Nature #Rabbits

titled "Swimming Turtles", a design by the legendary Edo-period master Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849).
titled Swimming Turtles, is a spectacular design by the legendary Edo-period master Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849). The long, narrow format captures three turtles navigating a rushing aquatic landscape filled with aquatic plants and swirling currents. Hokusai masterfully employs a series of sweeping, diagonal bands of color to represent the movement of water, creating a rhythmic and highly stylized sense of depth. The composition is structurally defined by three broad, curving diagonal bands of a light Prussian blue wash that slice across the frame from the upper left to the lower right. These bands create a powerful sense of an active, undulating current, cleverly dividing the composition into alternating planes of water and open space. Drifting through these currents are clusters of dark, fan-like water moss or pine-like aquatic foliage, rendered with dense, repetitive brushstrokes that introduce a crisp, high-contrast texture against the pale, aged background. In the lower third of the frame, long, slender strands of aquatic grass sway violently to the right, their fine, needle-like lines accentuating the speed and direction of the underlying stream. Nestled within this fluid environment are three meticulously detailed turtles, each captured from a different angle to showcase their structural forms. The topmost turtle is the smallest, depicted mid-swim as it appears to dive or turn sharply downward. Its dark, rounded shell and outstretched, clawed flippers give it a wonderful sense of weightless suspension. Below it, the largest of the three turtles pushes through the central current, its shell showcasing a beautifully precise, interlocking hexagonal carapace pattern. The third turtle occupies the middle ground, its body partially obscured by a sweeping current line as it paddles upward, its head turned alertly toward the surface.

My Spiny Flower mantis reached adulthood and earned his wings. They had time to dry out, so it was time to exhibit those beautiful wings! 😍

The maiko Tanewaka performs “A Brilliant Brocade of Chrysanthemums”.

Kyo Odori Program, Kyoto, Japan
This highly elegant full-length photograph captures the ethereal artistry of a traditional Japanese dance, featuring the maiko (apprentice geisha) Tanewaka performing "A Brilliant Brocade of Chrysanthemums" during the annual Kyo Odori program in Kyoto, Japan. Set against a muted, theatrical stage backdrop adorned with stylized iris motifs, the composition captures the dancer from behind and slightly to the side, freezing a moment of exquisite posture and fluid grace. Her body curves elegantly mid-movement, her right arm fully extended upward to hold aloft a beautiful folding fan (sensu). The fan is crisp white, detailed with vibrant orange chrysanthemums and delicate blue lines that mirror the thematic focus of her performance. Tanewaka's wardrobe is a spectacular showcase of traditional textile craftsmanship, characterized by vivid colors and meticulously woven seasonal motifs. She wears a flowing, powder-blue hikizuri (a trailing kimono worn for traditional dance) that pools elegantly around her feet on the polished wooden stage. The silk fabric is decorated with white and gold floral clusters, green bamboo leaves, and traditional geometric roundels. Her inner collar features a striking pop of deep crimson-red, providing a bold outline against the stark white makeup (shironuri) applied to her exposed neck. Tied high on her back is a dramatic, trailing darari obi (hanging sash) made of heavy, cream-white brocade silk. The sash is embroidered with magnificent, symmetrical butterfly motifs in brilliant orange, black, and red, intermingled with shimmering gold threads that catch the stage lights. The meticulous styling of the maiko reinforces the classical, centuries-old traditions of Kyoto's geisha districts. Her dark hair is sculpted into an intricate, glossy nihongami coiffure, beautifully embellished with seasonal kanzashi hair ornaments, including delicate coral beads and silver metallic pins that nestle into the topknot.

Wisteria tunnels at KawachiWisteriaGarden, Kitakyushu, Japan
the mature wisteria trees at the Kawachi Wisteria Garden (河内藤園), a world-renowned private garden nestled in the wooded hills of Kitakyushu, Japan. Celebrated globally for its magnificent, sweeping tunnels and massive overhead trellises of cascading blossoms, the garden offers one of the most immersive floral displays in East Asia during the peak of spring. This particular composition utilizes a dynamic low-angle perspective, positioning the viewer directly beneath the extensive wooden and bamboo support structure to emphasize the grand scale and sheltering, canopy-like effect of the living architecture. The visual anchor of the scene is the ancient, highly expressive trunk of a central wisteria vine, which twists and contorts upward from the grassy lawn like a piece of living, weathered sculpture. Its thick, deeply fissured dark bark splits into heavy, muscular branches that snake outwards in elegant, irregular curves, tracing a dramatic silhouette against the softer elements of the landscape. These powerful structural limbs reach up to support an astonishing, dense ceiling of thousands of elongated, pendulous flower racemes. The blossoms hang in tight, vertical curtains, transitioning gracefully through a rich tonal spectrum of deep violet, lavender, and pale orchid-pink, punctuated by tiny hints of white and fresh green foliage peaking through the upper layers. The sheer volume of the hanging clusters creates a dreamlike, translucent screen that filters the bright spring sunlight, casting a soft, purple-tinted glow across the entire garden floor. In the lower portion of the frame, the sun-dappled ground features a rolling carpet of vibrant green grass and scattered shadows cast by the dense floral canopy above. Slender wooden posts rise vertically from the lawn at regular intervals, blending harmoniously into the natural environment while providing essential structural support for the immense weight of the blooming canopy.

This iconic black-and-white photograph captures a woman in a traditional Japanese kimono walking through the snow while holding a wagasa (oil-paper umbrella). Photographer: Jiro Yabuzaki
A deeply atmospheric, high-contrast photograph capturing a figure walking through a heavy winter snowfall in what appears to be a historic Japanese district. The person is seen from the side, completely bundled in a dark, patterned winter kimono. They shield themselves from the cascading white flakes with a large, traditional oiled-paper parasol (wagasa) rendered in a deep purple or charcoal tone. In the background, a traditional wooden building features a dense vertical lattice wall partially dusted with white snow. A large, glowing oval paper lantern (chōchin) adorned with a dark, stylized floral crest hangs prominently from a wooden post, casting a soft warmth over the freezing, snow-covered ground below.

Itō Jakuchū, Old Pine and White Phoenix, 1765-1766, Tokyo, Museum of Imperial Collections
The composition centers on a majestic, larger-than-life white phoenix (hōō) rearing its head backward in a dramatic, triumphant cry as it prepares to take flight from the gnarled branch of an ancient pine tree. Jakuchū utilizes the mythical bird not just as a decorative element, but as a cosmic symbol of peace, virtue, and celestial harmony, capturing it with an obsessive, near-microscopic level of detail that defines his unique artistic legacy. The sheer visual brilliance of the painting lies in Jakuchū’s revolutionary approach to white-on-white texturing and pattern work. The phoenix's body is built from layers of pristine white pigment, where every individual contour feather on its breast and wing coverts is defined with an immaculate, openwork lattice design that mimics the delicacy of fine lace. Its sprawling, dramatic tail feathers loop and cascade across the upper sky in deep, elegant curves. In a highly imaginative touch, the primary ocelli (the eye-like spots) on the tail plumage are uniquely shaped like glowing red hearts outlined in white, save for a single prominent feather at the absolute peak which features a vibrant, emerald-green heart. The bird's fierce head is crowned with an intricate, serrated white crest, balanced by a sharp, open beak revealing a pale tongue, and a brilliantly saturated crimson wattle at its throat. It stands precariously on one elongated, golden-scaled leg gripping the rough bark with sharp, curved talons. The surrounding landscape balances the ethereal brightness of the phoenix with deep, saturated tones and dense natural forms. The ancient pine tree curves aggressively from the bottom left, its branches covered in thousands of fine, radiating pine needles executed in overlapping shades of deep forest green and charcoal. In the upper right corner, a massive, perfectly circular red sun cuts through the canopy, providing a bold geometric anchor and a standard auspicious pairing for the phoenix.
