What's your "origin" video game?

Most gamers have a lot of favorite games, sure, but there's always one that basically 𝘥𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴 you.

I'm talking about the game that flipped that little switch in your brain and made into a life-long gamer.

So, which game is 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙨?

I am way too excited for my 10k trail run tomorrow. Treherne is always one of my favourite weekends of the year. There's less than 50 people signed up for the trail runs (there's around 450 for the marathon/half/etc). Fall colours. Actual elevation!

part of doing a large project is just managing your own belief that the thing you imagine can exist, will exist, that somewhere within what you're making it already is.

It’s flooring to think about what happened Swartz and Altman is just doing what he’s doing
OpenAI employees circumvented paywalls to scrape training data from sites like NYT, per un-redacted court docs.

An alleged violation of JSTOR's terms of service set federal prosecutors on Aaron Swartz, even though the parties had already settled. Carmen Ortiz and Stephen Heymann disregarded that.

a guy in a tesla honked at me because i was a tiny bit in the street taking this picture. i moved aside and he rolled down his window to ask, with furrowed brow, "why take pictures of nothing?". he drove off before i could answer maybe the stupidest question i've ever been asked #coolpicturesbynicky

Okay so @defector.com has had an odd glitch since the site redesign a couple of weeks back where the wrong photo and headline are often put together on the main page and I was going to ask them about fixing it but this just happened and as far as I'm concerned they have to leave it as is.

The Jays go from having a perfect game in the 6th to losing 6-5. This season hurts so bad.
A devastating, 6-5 loss for the #BlueJays

the danger of AI, specifically in the "rogue AI hacking" stuff, is less that it's doing anything novel or "emergent," but much more that it is like handing over a enterprise-grade red-teaming tool suite to anybody that will pay them a subscription
A little weird that the pro-AI position is that it could potentially kill all of humanity and the anti-AI position is that it definitely won't.

FWIW I think there's a range of plausible outcomes for e.g. rogue AI hacking that are very bad even if you take human extinction off the table.

It's amazing how many "before the industrial revolution" takes can be demolished by flipping open almost any page of the diary of Samuel Pepys. For example, he meticulously documented MANY woodland rambles, with and without groping of women, for "country pleasure and good ayre."
The Washington Post opinion section is an elaborate experiment to find the least compelling angle on everything

5k done. I might've squeaked in under 30m, we'll see. Sprinted past some much-younger people the last few hundred metres. Last year I had to pull out of all my races with right knee pain, so I'm proud of this; I'm not young anymore. Trail run at Treherne next week.

RedHawks 6 - 5 Goldeyes. Fargo-Moorhead sweeps Winnipeg out of the playoffs. Poor umpiring misses several calls at 1st for the Goldeyes, and calls an out at 2nd for a basepath violation that would've given the Goldeyes a run. One of the worst-umpired games I've witnessed. A brutal end to the season
