It’s such a treat in these international tournaments to see players with extensive overseas experience just flip the switch to get back into that style, i.e. Stewie immediately reverting to Russian mobster ball. Will be missed in this new generation of players who stay domestic year round.

Cardoso gets a harsh whistle in part because she established habits as a rookie that she has not broken — and refs know to watch for them. She defends incessantly with her arms rather than her body and does not have a great grasp of where her cylinder exists.
This is a great observation. She gets a harsh whistle which seems to make her timid instead of curious about how she can play around it. And that seems like the kind of thing that needs a mindset oriented coach rather than an X and Os person like Tyler.

Will be writing about Cardoso more in depth as the season wraps up, but I think her sustained lack of defensive engagement and rim protection is what really holds her out of the “good” column. The blocks aren’t enough. Good player, but not the centerpiece the Sky needed out of that lottery pick.

Very sympathetic to the personal issues she’s been facing after the All-Star break, but Azurá Stevens simply has not been able to deliver to her top form (or the value of her contract) at all this season. Really tough defensive rotations from her in Seattle tonight.
