HOPE: Too long. I didn't like the CGI. But it's a fun ride. It made me laugh. Throughout the end, I was both admiring the balls and sweating in secondhand embarrassment. That means something. Maybe. Three stars.

I highly recommend Icarus Films' set of THE BATTLE OF CHILE, which includes the trilogy and a related, earlier film. I watched them all one Sunday back in May, absolutely great and compelling works.
Rest in peace Patricio Guzmán. Legend.

I was watching A NIGHT AT THE OPERA while my wife was sleeping on me. She woke up when Billy Gilbert briefly appeared, as if summoned by his presence, and recognized him as Pettibone from HIS GIRL FRIDAY. Then she fell back asleep.

WAR MACHINE (2026) is a by-the-numbers PREDATOR riff mixed with the Crisis-As-Therapy genre that's still pretty effective. Had the family hooting and hollering when we watched it on a home theater system. Big screen and sound system helped greatly, I think.

I really liked COYOTE VS. ACME, but I think an even higher compliment to it is that my wife (a more general audience member than a film or comedy dork like me) LOVED it. It's a real audience pleaser. They did the damn thing.

The wife and I are finishing BROADCHURCH tonight. My favorite part of the show has been saying the title the way John Mulaney pronounces "Broadway" as George St. Geegland.

ARMY OF SHADOWS is a bleak masterpiece. It shows that resistance usually amounts to killing each other rather than the enemy, with no promise you'll see the other side of it - if it ever comes. The characters know that, and still they continue.
Wrote up a murderer's row of all-time favs for our Best of 2006: Miami Vice, Jackass 2, Crank, The Prestige, and Inland Empire. The real delight was writing about Jean-Pierre Melville's Army Of Shadows, which opened in theaters that year after 25 years in exile. Andor fans do not sleep on Shadows!

I have never laughed harder in my life than when I saw REJECTED at Spike and Mike's Festival of Animation in college. My stomach hurt for hours.

THE ODYSSEY has made me realize what might be the crux of my feelings about Nolan's work. In the Soderbergh sense of macro vs. micro editing, I like Nolan's macro editing but often find his micro editing clumsy. So while I like the general idea and elements, the nuts and bolts keep me from swooning.

THE ODYSSEY has made me realize what might be the crux of my feelings about Nolan's work. In the Soderbergh sense of macro vs. micro editing, I like Nolan's macro editing but often find his micro editing clumsy. So while I like the general idea and elements, the nuts and bolts keep me from swooning.
